Corella sounding rocket (pix & links)
Hello All,
I came across material on Australia's last--so far--indigenously-developed sounding rocket, the Corella (please see the attachments and links below). Last night I watched this report (see: http://www.abc.net.au/landline/cont...12/s3586252.htm ) by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, "Home On The Range," which is about the ranchers who live near the Woomera Test Range, and the interesting things that fall onto their land from space. Watching it, I saw a *very* rare piece of Australian space hardware, at the ~2:50 and ~3:10 points in the report. Here it is: The Corella sounding rocket (see: http://space.skyrocket.de/doc_lau/corella.htm , http://www.asri.org.au/web/launchvehicle/corella , and https://www.google.com/search?q=Cor...&gbv=2&oq=&gs_l ), only *two* of which ever flew, in 1974 and in 1976, had a second stage fin assembly which resembled that of the American Nike-Tomahawk, but its diameter and fin sweep angles were different. At "The Twins" sheep station, they have a Corella second stage fin/nozzle assembly--unlike a Tomahawk's fin "can," the Corella's fin "can" 'necks down' in diameter where the fins are attached. That is a rare find indeed! If they remember where they found it, other Corella second stage parts might be found in the vicinity (a few kilometers) of where the fin/nozzle assembly was found. Kerrie Dougherty's historical paper (attached below) contains Corella dimensions and historical information.
