Default Scud fins in basswood

I have the pleasure of building a vintage Estes Russian Scud-B #1340. The die-cut 1/8" balsa fins were totally fossilized and turned to powder when I tried to shape them. The fins are relatively small, so I'll make them from basswood so they'll be rock-hard and only a tiny bit heavier.

Using one of the balsa fins as a pattern, I cut (4) blanks from 1/8" basswood and then traced the scraping pattern onto each with the supplied template. Using a dead-flat Corian slab with a 1/2 sheet of 220 grit taped to it, I pull the fin toward me to scrape the outer edge on one side, and then the leading edge on the same side. TBC

I then repeat for the other side, and voila! Nice, crisp bevels--and a LOT tougher than balsa. One down, three to go. TBC

Very nice...

A bit of advice... on build threads, if you want to keep your pics in order (like steps to doing something) you should upload them one by one rather than simply "browsing" all of the pics you want to upload and THEN hitting "upload"... because when you browse them all and THEN upload, they end up RANDOM ORDER on the post, REGARDLESS of whether you kept them in order in the "browse" boxes when you selected them.

I don't know why, but the forum software does it that way here, every time you upload more than a single pic at a time... TRF uses a single 'browse' box in their "manage attachments" deely-oh, so it's not an issue, but RP has a multiple browse box list and you can upload all of them at once over there and they come out in the order you put them in the browse boxes...

When doing a build (or more recently, the "study summaries" over in the scale section) I always his the first "browse button" and click the pic I want to upload, hit "Upload" and then when it hits the 'list" in the box, I hit the next "browse" and find the next pic, hit "upload", then the next, til I'm outta pics or outta boxes... that's the only way to get them to come up in specific order and match your text as you describe stuff...

Later and good luck! OL JR

Thanks Jeff. I'll edit that post to put them in order.

And now they're done!

I notice the taper on the leading edge is almost zero at the root and full taper at the outside edge of the fin. Is that scale?

The original fin is a little more complex; more reminiscent of the A4/V2 fin. You can see that the leading edge varies in depth from root to tip and the angle changes, while the thickness of the fin varies from root to tip. Estes took some liberties to simplify the fin shape, but it is pretty close to original in outline.

There is a great shot of the fin can here. Shame the author does not permit downloads.

Great picture John! I think I can sand that shape in by hand. It's a REALLY good thing I chose basswood, now.

Give me a few minutes, I'm still in my jammies and bunny slippers.

I'll have Mary take a photo to send.............................................. ............................................NOT!

At that scale I think you have done more than enough. My last buyer was pretty excited just to have an SS-1C to fly. Will you be finishing in the Estes specified "poo" brown?

I think making this a skill level 2 may have been a little generous--especially with this fin can work and all of those miserable, little decals.

NOW I know where the D.A.R.T. cone came from!

If you are asked for another one Sirius has the cone. The bottom ring can be carved out of a RA-2060 and Tango Papa has the decals. Also, the SS-1C was produced in two distinct airframes, mainly differentiated by the tunnel. The conventional weapon used a single tunnel, the nuclear variant used two 180 degrees apart
