Default Early Morming in Far West Texas

My sons and I had a good morning for a quick batch of launches. The main purpose was to test fly a science fair rocket with a new Altimeter2 from Jolly Logic. The other was to refly some rockets that for whatver reason didn't have a great first flight.

We started off with my most recent Rescue Bertha that was rebuilt (more like completed) with my youngest son. Flew great; managed to land on the only piece of pavement. Small fin chip but easily repaired. This was its first flight.

Second was my Alway Arcas modified to Super Arcas length. This rocket had a specatular CATO and almost hit my mother who was out to watch the grandsons earlier this year. I rebuilt it and repainted. This time no problems on a A10-3T. Landed just a few feet from the pad.

Third was my BT-60 size Bumper V-2 from Semroc parts. This was launched at 2010 NSL in Alamogordo and did a loop the loop right over the pad, headed North nearly horizontally and crashed into a Mesquite bush. I learned a valuable lesson about balancing and nose weights in V-2s. This time great flight on a C6-3.

Fourth was the science fair rocket -- basically a BT-50 Aerobee with a payload bay with a number of holes to permit a Jolly Logic Altimeter2 to do its stuff. Worked great. The Jolly Logic is such a tremendous improvement on the Estes altimeter it's just unreal.

Fifth was my Sputnik. Rod whip or pad tip sent it low going West at 30 degrees from horizontal. We saw the parachute deploy just before impact but after an hour of diligent search we were unable to find it.

We launched my Viking for my NARTrek qualifier flight and got 33 seconds on the streamer from a B6-6. Unfortunately one of the fins delaminated. I'm not sure how to fix that but I will.

Last was the strange case of Cohete-Uno, my 1/10 scale version of the first Mexican liquid fuel rocket from Peter Alway's drawings in Sport Rocketry. At ignition, there was a tremendous fireball that blew the nose off and shot out of the top of the tube. The fireball traveled about 25 feet from the pad and burned out on impact with the ground. The rocket never moved. The casing had nothing in it - nozzle and all powder was gone, presumably in the fireball. I made a report.

Looks like a good, fun day of model rocket flying. Nice collection of birds, there!

I LOVE the Bumper V2!

Sorry to hear about the Sputnik and the Cohete-Uno.

PLEASE post photos of the aforementioned fireball!

LOL,

I was down -range in the recovery area and too concerned about the proximity of the fireball to my older son, who was handling launch duties, to take pictures. He had his phone camera out but was too surprised (and probably a little scared) to take a picture. The rocket itself is already repaired.

We would make lousy photo-journalists.

It was really cool to see though . . . .

Mark,

What engine did the Cohete- uno have in it? It sounds similar to some problems listed at the Cantina's S.A.M.E. (Survey of Anecdotal Malfunctioning Engines). Do you have the Batch no.?

Bernard,

Cohete-Uno was packing C6-5, lot number A041707, part of a 24 pack of assorted sizes.

It flew successfully a week later on a C6-5 from a different lot.
