More Rocketeering This Morning
Yep…out and about and launching rockets at 7 a.m. this morning. Perfect weather in sunny Colorado! 56 degrees and clear, and no wind.
Since the ol’ Hornet is my designated flagship, it gets launched first at every flying session. Perfect flight for #13 today on a ½A. Streamer deployed and the model landed within 25 feet of the launcher! Next up was the maiden flight of my new Star Trooper on a ½A-4T. Flew nice, straight, and HIGH. Not bad for such a small engine. Unfortunately, the model was recovered with a fin completely missing. Stinkin’ nose cone snap-back again. Back to the workbench for a new fin and a longer shock cord…Sigh! Anyway, had fun….!

When I got back into rocketry I forgot how well the 13mm engines performed in BT-5 based rockets.
I lost a few small models using an A3-4t.

I still have several packs of the old Centuri B3 13 mm engines. I built several rockets able to take those, including a Star Trooper. I launched it last year with a B3-6m and everyone lost sight of it until one sharp-eyed kid spotted it coming down gently about 150 ft from the pad.

In fact, as I recall, back around 2000, the 1/4A's were quite scarce. But for best results with a new Mosquito (and a recent BAR) they're about perfect for getting the rocket back. After a while, after a few flights, tracking and recovering a Mosquito with the A3 becomes a less risky thing, but for a recent BAR, it's easy to lose a brand new rocket with those motors. I seem to recall losing a Quark on its first flight back then. I want to say I saw a buddy lose a Flis Tumbleweed on its first flight as well, and that might have been on a 1/2A - not even a full one. Doug .
