Semroc Heli Roctor build
I haven't done a long-winded, unctuous, pun-laden, alcohol-infused build thread in a long time, so now that I'm back from Point Of Rocks, WY, it's time to build the:
Semroc #CV-02 Heli Roctor All parts are accounted for and are in perfect condition. The kit includes (not only) the smallest curtain hooks I've ever seen, but also (3) (what appear to be) RC airplane control surface hinges. Should be different and fun! TBC

Yep. Those are standard DU-BRO control surface hinges.
Few in R/C still use those though. Most that still build (and ARF manufacturers) now use CA glued "EZ Hinges" that are just faster to complete and just as long-lasting hinge method.

To prepare the nose cone for use, I insert it into a scrap piece of BT-5 and then give it a wash of diluted wood filler. I'll sand it smooth after the wood filler has dried.
Now for some boring crap about knots! The instruction say to use (3) square knots for this, but it would look like the last photo. (maybe he meant 3 overhand knots.) Instead, I'll attach the Kevlar cord to the JT-5 coupler with a single bowline knot (second photo.) It uses very little cord and won't loosen. If you don't know how to make a bowline knot, consult your Bluejackets Manual or go on line. Everything is on line and it's ALL true! TBC

The fin can assembly is together and awaiting fillets.
To set the dihedral(?) of the rotor blades a jig is provided. I rarely use thick CA for anything, but I think in this case it's warranted and I run a bead of it down the seam, smooth it out, and then hit it with a shot of accelerator. TBC

A lazy day today. Weather has tanked.
The rotor blades are assembled and the dihedral(?) angle of each is set. I've CA'd the hinges onto the back side of each blade and shot each with accelerator. I tugged each hinge to make they were on tight. Now for some technique (stop rolling your eyes--this one is actually useful) The hinges absolutely CANNOT be allowed to fail, so to add security to each--without adding much weight--I apply a tiny dot of 30 minute epoxy to each of the (6) holes on each hinge using a bamboo cooking skewer. The long cure time of the epoxy will allow it to seep down to the wood and act as a rivet. OK, the long-winded "now for some technique" crapola is over. You can wake up now. TBC

Fascinating build. I found the technique for securing the hinges to be quite riveting.

This next technique may or may not work, so I first make a copy of the cardstock rotor hinge mount.
It's not that I don't trust the cardstock rotor hinge mount, well, actually, I DON'T trust the cardstock rotor hinge mount, so I'll try reinforcing it with sheet styrene. I first spray the back of the cardstock rotor hinge mount (I'll now refer to it as the CRHM) with 3M Super 77 spray adhesive and lay it onto a piece of .010" thick sheet styrene. The .010" thick styrene won't crack when it's creased like .020" will. I then cut out the styrene-backed CRHM and make the folds. "The Vixen" has informed me that my lunch is ready. TBC

The next step is to attach the rotors to the CRHM. If I'm going to paint or color the rotors it would be best to do it before attaching them.
