Default Through-the-wall fin mounting

I have always been a mod-roc guy but am starting to move into mid- and maybe high-power stuff. My question is at what motor size do you really need through-the-wall fin mounting?

I usually start with E powered models. Since most of my 24 mm motored birds will fits anything from D12 to an F21.

I think it makes sense to mount the fins of booster stages TTY.

I'm not sure there is a rule of thumb.

Basically, the higher the stress, the more 'need' for TTW, such as fast burn motors or large fins, etc.

I've build ' D' powered birds with TTW, for both boost and landing strength - on the other end, I've flown cardboard rockets with wall mount fins on a J1500 motor ( NO GLASS , just good straight fins and good fillets ) .

have fun 'moving up' to mid-power, it's all fun :-)

I hate to display my ignorance, but at what point do you move from balsa to bass to plywood?

That is a good question, and it depends.... I use 1/4" Balsa for up to E and F models. basswod splinters easily, and I do not use it at all. Ply is what I use for anything G powred or above.
