Default Estes Optima

I flew this one a few weeks back only partially finished, so I thought I'd show a few pics of just what the Mylar tape adds to the finished look of this bird. I went with red and silver Mylar because the orange looked to have very little "pop" to it.

Very tacky tape. Feels like it should hold up well, but I have enough for several do-overs should the need arise.

Did you fly it on something decently sized for the airframe or the passe' Estes D12 ?
The only way a rocket this large should fly on D12's is with at least 3 of them.

Yes, there is such a thing as NORMAL
, if you have to ask what is "NORMAL" , you probably aren't !

Failure may not be an OPTION, but it is ALWAYS a POSSIBILITY.
ALL systems are GO for MAYHEM, CHAOS, and HAVOC !

So far only on an E9-4, but the capability is there if I decide to up the shred potential. Hard landing on the first flight cracked a fillet, so that's not likely. I like the flight pattern on the E9-4.

I had one of those once, but I turned it into a upscale 'Yellow Jacket'.

What did you fly it on?
I've never actually "had" one. This one is just shop scraps. I had three lengths of BT-80 around that, with some trimming, came out to just the right length for the Optima. One was so short that the rocket literally has a fin can. When I flew it a few weeks back, the line around the rocket where the fin can is was clearly defined when the impact blew the Fill & Finish out. (I think there was a picture in my launch report. It was kind of an on-topic thread, so it may have gotten lost among the Obama/NHL/Race Relations threads. ) I repainted the black section this weekend before I applied the tape. The nose cone was one of several I got online several years ago. I did have to purchase some CR-5080 centering rings and an E-hook from Semroc, but the rest is pretty much salvage.

I think you just need to start using catchier thread titles like "Obama from the scrap heap!!" then just pretend you meant Optima all along.
Anyway, it flew on D12's, E15's (both Estes and Aerotech), E30's and I think I flew it on a F12 reload once. Suffered a few zippers and broken/cracked fins, but it was a really nice flier. The friend I built it with did a great job on the yellow jacket design. I wish I had a better photo of it.

I guess it's not flying anymore? I started building a 1:1 Yellow Jacket clone a long time ago, but someone posted about needing that particular nose cone, so I gave it away. Every now and then I run across the fins. I REALLY like the idea of the upscale. So much so that I'm considering opening one of my Canadian Arrow kits as a nose cone donor. (Might as well. Isn't Estes reissuing the V-2 sometime soon?)

No, sadly its gone to that 300 acre flying field in the sky.
I still have the nose cone though. The Estes BT80 has a limited life span when
Used in longer rockets. Semroc's HD version would be my choice if/when I build
Another. I'd peel the first couple of inches out of the front end so the nose cone would fit, and I'd probably have it separate at the black/ yellow paint line.
Just thinking out loud here...
