There is an article in the HUVARS spring 2005 newsletter about strengthening the Honest John.

If you want to "bullet-proof" it, use a thick wall body tube and scratch-build the fins, using through-wall construction !

A D12 is "wimpy" in ALL of the Estes Maxi-Brutes . . . Always has been.

+1 to the D12 being WIMPY in any of the Estes Maxi-Brutes.
I have never flown any of them on less than a full 40 n-sec composite E.

Yes, there is such a thing as NORMAL
, if you have to ask what is "NORMAL" , you probably aren't !

Failure may not be an OPTION, but it is ALWAYS a POSSIBILITY.
ALL systems are GO for MAYHEM, CHAOS, and HAVOC !

Back in the 1970's, a Maxi-Brute V-2 would "limp" to about 150 ft. , or so, on a D12-3.

Back then, the BP used by Estes had more Specific Impulse that what they use today.

Then you have no idea. I've flown the Pershing and HoJo. The Pershing is woefully under powered on the D12 to the point I wondered if it would ever get high enough to recover. The HoJo flies great on a D12. It doesn't hit the stratosphere, but it makes a good demo flight. Like you, I've never flown the V-2 on a D12 (or any motor) so I have no idea if it is under powered.

Under powered means it doesn't fly fast enough to be stable or doesn't get enough altitude for the 3 second delay. The Pershing experienced both and was immediately retired after the first flight since I had no knowledge of composites at the time. The HoJo is perfectly stable and needs all of the 3 second delay if not a little more. Not going high enough or fast enough to tickle your fancy doesn't make it under powered. It only makes it inadequate to compensate for you.

I have SEEN all of them flown on a WIMP-O D12; I have not been foolish enough to fly any of my OWN on that motor. I consider the HoJo on a D12 as DISMAL at best. Estes should have clustered 3 D12 motors for the Pershing, V2, Saturn V, and Saturn 1B.
