Default Centuri USS America auction

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...E:B:ONA:US:3160

I tried for this, but got outbid. I thought it would be cool to do something with the remains of the USS America. Had I not just built one, I'd have been more interested, but I figured I'd use the nose cone as the start of an ESS Raven if I won.

Is that fuse coiled up in the one picture, I noticed there was no visible launch controller and the piesce of launch rod visible looks bent. I think the guy was lucky to get $17 for it.

I thought about it, too, but with Semroc's getting ready to release one, I figured I'd just wait a little longer.
Besides, I have quite a few 'restoration projects' waiting anyway!

I thought the blue thing at the bottom of the box might have been the controller. No idea about the coil. The only fuse I ever worked with came out of an unrolled inch-and-a-halfer. My initial impulse was to bid $30 with postage, but when the rubber hit the road I decided to go $25 and hope that no one else noticed the auction. Ah, well.

Looks like "cannon" fuse to me, wonder if he was lighting his motors with it?

I always used fuse when I first got into rocketry. It was on the rack right next to the motors at the hobby shop. Simple. I still carry it, except for Saturday when my launch controller gave out. I have misplaced my other one. Fuse works.

NOTHING wrong with fuse unless one is caught up in all the mamby-pamby nar safety code requirements.

It is green waterproof 'cannon' fuse in that pic.

It is a MUCH more economical way to launch rockets if one is out of igniters supplied with motors. Also has a higher success rate due to the burning sparks from fuse sprayed upward into the grain even if it does not contact it as an igniter must.

Before anyone berates me on this, the first few years of model rocketry there was nothing other than FUSE ignition and that is what the Carlisle motors came with for ignition.

My buddies and I always used to use this method as it had about a 99% success in ignition rate.

We always used to have 'rocketry' in the spring of 8th grade in science class in my school district. My buddy and I convinced the teacher of the virtues of FUSE launching (any teacher wants lower costs) the year we were in the 8th grade. We even informed him it was against the nar safety code and his reply was "what is this 'nar' business"? That was way back in 1982 and I don't think he ever used an electrical controller/igniters after that day until he retired around 2001.

Yeah, when I was a tyke, back in the late 60's-early 70's, a little tin of Jet-X fuses and a pack of matches fit rather nicely in my pocket. Riding a bicycle to the field, the last things I wanted to carry was a launch console and a battery to make it all work!
I cannot remember having a launch failure using fuses (though I'm sure it happened once in a while).
Left more room in my baskets for rockets!
To this day, I carry the green fuse (in lengths of a foot) all coiled up in a little ziploc...just in case!

Man, those were the days!!!

Default I heard tell...............

I have heard that some people would use cannon fuse to ignite a model rocket motor that would null and void the NAR model rocket safety code. I have heard some old guys were to lazy to drag a launcher and battery out to fire his yearly rocket. I have heard tell a certain manufacturer that would ignite pink thermalite with his or his fathers lighter when testing motors. No I do not think A N Y B O D Y on this site would have such a gross dis respect for rules or safety...................
