Default My Aerogloss Fillercoat recipe

Since moving to TN, I had to leave my chemicals/dopes/paints behind........Dang liability with the moving company. I decided to make my own Aerogloss Fillercoat from the original SDS sheet. So far, this has worked at well and fills the grain with minimal sanding. Since it is mostly thinner, it dries fast in about 15 to 20 min. I have found it takes 3-4 coats to fill the grain. Like the original Fillercoat, this does not seal the balsa, you would need a sealer for that. I have not been able to replicate the sealer since the original Aerogloss was not their same dope based product. I don't like FNF, water based products, papering fins, or store bought wood sanding sealers. This recipe is for those of us that love the smell of Dope in the morning and miss our Aerogloss products.
I use .5oz of Testors Putty, .1-.2 oz of Tamiya putty and fill the 1oz glass jar with Butyrate thinner. I like Randolph thinner but Sig works just fine. Just like Aerogloss, You have to stir real good before each use. You can see from the pictures how the Calcium settles in the original fillercoat, same happens with my recipe. Once again, this if for those crazy rocket builders with no brain cells left from model airplane paints and glues.

Do you have a formula for serving it 'on the rocks'?

Seriously, do you find the thinner-based 'delivery' vehicle to have enough adhesion properties to keep the filler solids on the wood well enough? Maybe there are portions of that in the putty to help with adhesion, but was just curious about that aspect of it. I recall waaaaay back in the day and trying to stretch my filler coat out some because I could not always afford it by putting in additional talcum powder and some thinner. At some point generally after several iterations of that, the applied filler coat would, after drying and doing some attempted sanding, have a tendency to flake off in places if I was not careful.

I have not had any issues with adhesion and am surprised how well the fillercoat stays in the grain. It really does not sit on top of the balsa like FNF or wood fillers do. Testors is mainly calcium and I only add a small amount of Tamiya but I don't think it is necessary. I was using squadron white putty, but it has been discontinued. This recipe is cheap for me since I buy my dope thinners for my model airplanes.

Ok, thanks for the info. I may give this one a try.

Aero Gloss Sanding Sealer is just white styrene dissolved in clear butyrate dope.
Shave little pieces of styrene off plastic sprues into a jar of clear dope and you have the same product.

Bummer your moving company wouldn't allow you to ship your paints/chemicals.
I know how I would have handled THAT.

If it's NOT commercial (doing commerce/sales in said goods shipping) I see no need for regulation. (personal use only quantities).
Then again, My hobby stuff would only get moved in a U-Haul piloted by ME.
Learned the hard way on that.

Of all the trucking companies, U-Haul has the worst drivers.
