During a discussion with Mike Fritz and John Boren of Estes I was asked if I would like to fly one of the new F15 motors.
Need they ask. I had my 50+ flights AeroTech Arreaux model in the car. After consultimg with John about the weight and size of the model, John handed me an F15-6 motor. The motor is slightly shorter than an AeroTech G40/G80 motor so John gave me a spacer that would take up the space in the AeroTech kit's motor mount. I was also given a standard Estes igniter, err, 'starter' and a white colored motor plug. At ignition, the Arreaux rose into the sky. It wasn't like a swift kit one one get from a composite motor. The model flew very straight (Wind was 3-5 mph) and at or just past apogee ejected the parachute. The model decended to the ground and was recovered without incident. I pulled out the motor and shook the rocket to get all the ejection charge debris out of the motor tube. The ejection charge had no problem with the AeroTech baffle system. I hope to fly one or two more of these E16/F15 motors before the end of the NSL.

Indeed. I'm going to try to get my hands on one of those E16-6s for my SLS Aero Dart tomorrow as well. Should give it a nice ride without the long hike I had today after flying it on a single grain CTI Blue Streak motor. That went to over 1350 feet and briefly punched through the low cloud layer.
I have some pictures of the models display but it will be a day or three before I put them up. It was quite something to see and actually touch some of those models. While I haven't gotten to fly the new 29mm BP motors yet I did fly a pre-production version of the Estes Altimeter several times with good results. The two flights that also had another altimeter aboard (PerfectFlite Pnut) showed very good agreement on reported altitude. Of that more later as well. Had a lovely long chat with Carl McLawhorn this morning and two or three other short ones. More tomorrow.

Update. The E16/F15 motors should be available in the next two to three months. No SRP for the motors has been decided yet.

Estes had more than the 29mm BP E16/F15 motors to show and demo at NSL.
The company displayed the first models/products to use these new motors. These products will come under the Pro Series II category but will be E2X! Plastic fins, through-the-wall pre-slotted/colored body tubes, plastic centering rings with sockets for the fin tabs, a clever plastic shock cord anchor system and several unique plastic detail parts. Models will be two inches in diameter. There is even a two-stage model which was demo flown at the NSL. All models shown will be packaged in full-color boxes. There will be a Launch Set for this series which will feature a rocket (Prowler), the 'E' launch pad with additional blast deflector support and the Electron Beam Controller with a LED bulb. SRP is to be around $99. As to where you will be able to buy this product line, besides normal hobby dealers/online vendors these products will be available in select Wal-Mart and later Target stores. Hobby Lobby will be carrying a portion of the line. Cool stuff.

Having flown an Estes F15 motor on Saturday, I wanted to try one of the Estes E16 motors.
I selected my Semroc SLS Aero-Dart as the model to be used. After discussing the model with John Boren he suggested an E16-6 based on the models mass (10 oz) and diameter (1.84 inches). John said the -6 second delay would be a little long but the -4 second delay would be too short. I loaded the rocket with the E16-6 motor and checked it over. Once I was satisfied with my work, off to the rangehead! The rocket was loaded on the pad awaiting it's turn to fly. At ignition, the model rose smartly into the sky. Ejection was past apogee but the model recovered without incident except for a cracked fin fillet. These motors are fun.

Just back to my room from the night launch. As with the latter part of the daytime, conditions ranged from calm to lots of blowing dust. Some interesting models to be sure.
I did get to try one of the F15s (F15-6) in my SLS Aero Dart today....very very nice flight that went higher than the single-grain Blue Streak flight from yesterday. Bob has many more details about the whole line that will be built around these 29mm motors....and there's more in the pipeline that I was asked not to talk about. Overall this day was better weather-wise until well into the afternoon - when the wind started to come back up. Lots of flying and lots of pictures being taken. I'm sure there will be a good spread in Sport Rocketry and likely other places. I'm afraid I wasn't in much of a reporter mode myself....
