Default AmTrak derailment

AmTrak without a derailment is like a Western Movie without a Hangin'.
It should be renamed AmTRASH.

I would not get on one of those death-traps even if I was at the controls.

According to the scroll on one of the news channels today, the train was doing 106 mph in a 50 zone. Frankly, 106 ain't all that fast for a train...except when it's in a 50 zone

It will be interesting to see what else comes out.
...
Condolences to the injured and the families of those hurt or killed.

Doug

Engineer isn't talking—not a good sign. Nobody has mentioned the Conductor yet. It's his train.

The conductor has skull fractures and last I heard, was in critical condition.

Government drones are in use everywhere...

They come in all shapes and sizes...

Some walk on two legs...

Some fly...

106 mph really is not much for a train unless on the junk tracks here in the USA.
Our passenger AmSlak trains not only share the freight tracks (unlike ALL other modern nations), they are secondary to them.
It makes ZERO sense to have a passenger train traveling over DOUBLE the track-rated speed unless their was either an uncorrectable mechanical failure or a severe human failure (asleep, stroke, seizure, anaphalaxis, etc).
Something is severely fishy here; quite frankly I'm hoping the 'orange box' reveals something OTHER than the usual 'human negligence'.

I have ridden the Shinkansens (Bullet Trains) in Japan several times and the "slow" ones exceed that speed by a LOT. The "Duck Billed" fast ones are WAY faster than that.

Whatever the cause/s of this tragedy, one thing is certain: Never let a crisis go to waste.

The term 'engineer' for the one that runs the throttles on a train is an oxymoron.
They should be renamed 'motorman' or something like that.
Train-runners called 'engineers' are an insult to us REAL engineers that design/troubleshoot actual machines.
One of my high-school buddies put "anything but railroad" on the line of his GMI (now Kettering University) application under the heading line "Type of engineering interest". His admissions officer found it hilarious.

I like the British term for that kind of engineer, engine driver which is more descriptive of the job.
