Default K-36 Saturn - V Repairs Underway

I'm currently doing some long, awaited repairs to the upper section of my 1/100 scale Estes Apollo/Saturn - V model I built and flew back in 2009. For those who don't remember, I flew this model in July 2009 down at Needville, TX for the 40th Anniversary of the Apollo - 11 Flight. The launch was great, but the recovery system for the upper section was ripped off on ejection from the engines and it "lawn darted" at high speed into the ground, badly damaging the "nose" section (as shown in the first picture). The 2nd picture shows the model prior to launch. The 3rd picture shows the main section returning under three 24" parachutes. I hope to fly this model once again after the repairs are completed.

Post Script: For some reason, the pictures are not posting in the order I'm uploading them.

So far the repairs are coming along nicely. The SLA and SM are only "dry fitted" here. The SM needs to be shorten a little bit. The CM is actually the part that comes with the Estes X-Prize Gauchito kit, which I bought a while back when it was on clearance (can't remember if it was at Wal-Mart or Hobby Lobby). I knew I was going to need the BT-58 body tube from that kit to repair this Saturn - V. I will probably be getting the very popular "skins" for the SLA and SM from John Pursley to complete the repairs soon.

Sorry to hear about your earlier problems but the repairs look good.

What did you fly it on when it crashed?

It was a five engine cluster; D12-3 core and four C6-3 outboards. I made a mistake on the placement of the tubes for the outboards (should have been a little further from the center) but it wasn't really an issue at all. I was able to use four of the plastic F1 nozzles over the C6's. Launch and the flight was perfect, only that the 38" plastic parachute for the upper section stripped from the shroud lines immediately after ejection and that section lawn darted. The play dough in the SM actually allowed the damage to be minimal considering how fast it was coming down.

Might have been traveling a little fast at ejection. We use either A D12-3 & 4 A8-3's (maybe 250') or a D12-5 & 4 C6-5's. (Maybe 475-500'. We build heavy.

We picked up several of the Gauchito's when they first came out to have for just such an occurrence too.

Verna ran off several copies of the upper paper shrouds too on heavy white paper at the office as well. If you ever a paper shroud need one let us know and we'll mail one to you for free. All you'll have to do is cut it out.

Your photos of the last flight are great! Hope you get some good ones when it flies again.

Are you scratch building the tower? I made a drawing for my 1/100th Saturn 1B (link here) in case you're interested. Not sure if eRockets/Semroc still carries those parts for the nose/tube/skirt

EDIT:
they have it http://www.erockets.biz/semroc-bals...conical-flared/

not positive about the description of the tube, however

Yes, in observing that flight in July 2009, it was still moving pretty fast at the time the ejection charge blew. Next time I fly this model I will use the five second delay engines (D12 and four C6's). Plus I will be using a nylon parachute for the upper section along with stronger mounting of the recovery system (using kevlar this time).

I have a "new" complete set of the Estes Apollo Capsule/LES/RCS that forum member "genimijim" sent me back in August 2010 (yes, it's been that far back!). At that time, my oldest daughter marriage failed and she along with her son (our grandson) had to move back to my house. Much of her belongings took a lot of room in my garage (where my workspace is) and I was unable to do much rocketrywise for about 3 - 4 years (as far as building and repairing was concern). Plus, if genimijim hadn't sent me that set, I recall recently that John Boren of Estes had posted that Estes was planning on making such a set separately for sale for those who needed it for lost pieces and/or repairs. But thanks for the link to the drawings, I'm saving it anyway David!

Thank you! I thought I had imagined that (just turned 59 so I don't trust some of my memory now ) If/when Estes makes these available, I am loading up!!! I bought spare Mercury and 1/45 Apollo capsules. I keep checking Estes' website but don't see spare 1/100 Apollo capsules...hoping the re-release of the Saturn V will put some in stock....

I do recall reading (either here or at TRF) John answering someone's question regarding Estes stocking spare Apollo CM/LES/RCS for this reason. I'd like to keep some on hand too, even make an Apollo Little Joe - II at 1/100 scale that I've long wish to have (to replace the Centuri kit of that size I had back in the 1970's and early 80's).
