Lots of information in this interview. One big take away - if you like Estes PSII builder kits get them soon...

Yup, although I was left feeling a bit uncertain about the details. It sure sounded like sourcing the plywood was a problem, which could mean that the non-plywood models like the E2X stuff and the Star Orbiter could stick around. And John said the 29mm BP motors weren't going anywhere, so presumably Estes will want to sell kits to drive sale of motors.

So it did indeed sound like the builders kits did not have much of a future, but I gathered that *something* will stick around...

The big PSII builder kits were really best flown on composites, and now that those are out of the picture I'm not surprised the kits are being discontinued.

It would have been nice to have smaller builder kits specifically for the BP motors. I've been using these in under-2" models quite successfully; things like the Semroc SLS mid-power kits, and a 2x scale Astro-1.

I bought a Star Orbiter - haven't started working on it but the parts seem pretty nice. Should build up to a nice mid-power rocket, maybe even light enough to fly on C engines. If this is the future of Estes mid-power rockets can't really complain - those big black powder PSII engines should work very nicely in rockets like the Orbiter.

Short answer is yes. Long answer is they have to keep the E30 around because it's the only recommended motor for the Little Joe II, but all the others are done for.

I'm surprised there hasn't been discussion of John's hints about a past kit returning "in a few months." I think he said it was a sci-fi kit with a non-axisymmetric nosecone and it's black in color.
