I like that last image for the view of the black/white split on the hold-down.

Your model is likely good enough for what I need: 1/70th or maybe even 1/100th scale. There is talk around here about a 50th anniversary celebration for Apollo 7 and I am looking at 3D printing some sets of fiddly bits for the centerpiece models if we do that again. Bill

3D printing would have been a big help back when I was doing one of the A7 40th builds. I made "an attempt" to scratch a good set of pieces in plastic for one hold-down, using photos of the rocket garden display from KSC, then doing an RTV mold from that. Took a few more than eight casts before I got a suitable set... I don't know which would be easier, if you go the 3D print method -- creating a 1-piece hold-down and brace assembly, or multiple pieces to be glued together. Saying they're "fiddly bits" is an understatement... Consider printing the whole fin, too. It's not the easiest thing to build up eight identical fins from balsa and cardstock. That was nine years ago this year (incredible!), and today my 55-year-old fingers just don't flex like a kid's fingers anymore, popping and snarling if they come near anything that small. I made a master fin for that build, too, and they came out nice except for the very tip. Putty and sanding sticks...

Thanks, those pics are great. I had already used a few of those for my CAD model but I see a couple of new details that can improve it.
BTW there's this: www.apollosaturn.com The author says it's just back on the line. Lots of good Saturn photos. |
