Going off on a tangent here... anybody have considered building this model (or clone of it) as a Colonial Viper from Battlestar Galactica?

Not too far off a tangent, those were similar vintage kits from Estes and Centuri. You can get these kits from More Rockets today:

Got the decals on!

I damaged one of the "gun ports" so I put it on the bottom.

The decal was one big sheet so I cut everything out close to the edges of the pattern.

On the pad at URRG. And then a blurry launch picture. Last minute the camera decided to autofocus on something else

Flight profile was weird. Came off the rod and rotated - flew somewhat horizontal. Fortunately chute came out just in time and no damage. Flew on a C6-3

That's about how I remember mine flying. I retired it after a couple flights. It really needs a C5-3 and a 3/16" rod and even with that I'm not sure how straight it would fly.

I wonder how it would handle a D10 or even a D21?

I wonder what the speed of card stock is????

I don't know. I'd be wary of a full D because I have a feeling it won't fly straight up even with a good kick. I'd hate for it to take off down range and then prang before it ejects.

If I had a couple of them to play with, I'd be tempted to build one for the C11-3.

One of my favorites and my first experience with rear ejection.

This rocket came out near the end of my first rocketry period (prior to the Military and then kids). It was at a time when I had started taking more time to build in an attempt make them pretty.
Spent lots of time on the build and it came out great.
First time I lauched it it flew about the same profile as yours, till ejection when I then noticed a seperation of the parachute and a white ballistic blur, Heading straight down.

I had failed to tuck the shock cord in well enough and the engine burnt it in half.

I found the engine mount thanks to the chute but could not find the starfighter anywhere finally gave up as it started getting dark.

About 6 weeks later when cutting thru the field on the way home from school( after 2 snow storms) I saw a white flash in the sage brush and yuccas. Ended up being my starfighter burried nose down in the ground about 3/4s of the way up the nose cones. Pulled it out slowly and amazingly it was in good shape. Replaced the shock cord and flew it many more times. Always had a "mud ring" stain on it . Still had it for many years till my parents sold their house when I was in Japan and my dad disposed of all my brothers and my left behinds.

Use an Aerotech 18mm D21/D24-4T (SU or 18mm RMS).
That has plenty of kick for a vertical flight and it still won't over-stress the fibreboard.
A C5-3 would work if you can find any and if you can fly de-certed (old) motors at your site.

Yes, there is such a thing as NORMAL
, if you have to ask what is "NORMAL" , you probably aren't !

Failure may not be an OPTION, but it is ALWAYS a POSSIBILITY.
ALL systems are GO for MAYHEM, CHAOS, and HAVOC !

The D21 would be ok with a 0.9 second burn time, but I wouldn't even let it sniff the D10 that was mentioned. With the flight profile I recall on C5-3's, it has a good chance to power prang or lawn dart. (If you have to choose one, go for power prang. )
