This is another rescue rocket Centuri Space Shuttle I've been working on putting back together. Considering it was in a several pieces (nothing was still attached on the small shuttle), it is not too bad looking with some minor paint touchup. I corrected some construction errors on the piggyback mount.

This kit must be one of the most rare of the OOP kits from that era.

Back when RMR was at it's peak and the auction frenzy hit, Wolf and I exchanged several emails and a kit or two but what he was really looking for at the time was this kit. I didn't have one to sell but I told him I would keep an eye open and if I found one I'd get it for him. That was about 20 years ago and I still haven't run across one at any price.

Verna & I wanted to get it for him as a gift and a thank you for keeping up the RMR FAQ. That FAQ was amazing and I'm sure took a great deal of effort on his part.

I'm still looking and if I ever find one, I know who will get it.

Probably, only a few runs of the KC-6 were made. The Skill Level 5 difficulty that this kit was given probably scared off many potential builders. I think that there were more Centuri Space Shuttles that got started than were finished. As Carl McLawhorn stated in the Semroc Space Shuttle's instructions that the Centuri issue was fairly hard to trim.

I've only seen one other example of the balsa nose version of the shuttle, it was an unopened bagged kit on eBay a few years ago. If I recall correctly, it had the insert card style with the roll pattern across the middle. I've kicked myself for not getting it. The copyright on the instructions is 1970 and the copyright on the plastic nose version instructions is August of 1971. I think the 1971 Centuri catalog might be when the shuttle first appeared, but not sure of that.

I finished sanding and sealing the balsa and putting the shuttle back together. It went back together without issue. It turned out well I think. I have to decide what colors to paint it, I am thinking white for the carrier, yellow for the shuttle, and black for the power pod, that would match the one I had on the 70's.

I almost hate to see it painted. It's cool to see the old print on the balsa. However, I like your color choices. That's how I did mine but I left the pod unpainted except the back end of it.

I do know what you mean about painting it, same thoughts crossed my mind. It is cool seeing the printed balsa. You are making me have second thoughts! It was cool restoring this.

I just finished building the Vintage Centuri kit, it came with plastic nose and canopies with die cut wood. I did not use any primer just balsa sealer to keep the weight down and the gliders do pretty well during trim flights. I love the look of vintage builds all built up with bare balsa and cardboard, I sometimes hate painting them as well.

I've decided for now to not paint this one. It's a rare version of the shuttle, and unpainted just adds to the character of it.
