On my Mini Honest John, I cut the letters out of the “US MILITARY” decal to form US ARMY. Maybe decal sheets ought to just include enough extra letters, randomly placed on the sheet, of course, to provide any military marking you need?

I’m conflicted. I’m a huge fan of our military, but it’s irritating that licensing fees be demanded from vendors, which ultimately means from taxpayers. Sounds more like the feds thought of yet another way to stick it to us.

Not to get political here, but I agree. My fees are paid every week out of my paycheck. I can understand needing permission to represent the armed forces but licensing fees? This kind of greed helped destroy the plastic model industry and gave us $25+ model car kits.

Did anyone confirm that the various branches of the US military are requiring licensing/fees?

I know that Aerospace companies own the patent to their airplane design and copyright to their logo and any trade names for their airplanes/spacecraft.

Could Estes simply be trying to sell/market a model rocket with generic military markings so that people in other countries are more accepting?

maybe the word "FORCE' should be revised to something else?

"AIR FORCE" could become

"AIR SERVICE"

Any other suggestions?

Frankly, it’s only a bit of skin off my nose. I can solve this issue in the aftermarket

John Boren covered this a while back. They have to pay royalties. IIRC, he noted that the Honest John decals could be re-arranged to spell out US Army.

Seems like it was different back in the 40s :

Lordy, the guy has the Combat Infantry Badge and a Silver Star. Looks like European theater service.
