Yeah I guess. I've never seen a setting in Illustrator that lets you control the rasterized output resolution but maybe it's there. Same for Acrobat, I just thought it always printed at the maximum resolution of (and rasterized by) the printer. |

In the document setup and under Effect, there are settings for document wide rasterization control. From 72dpi to 1200dpi (for complex art). There are also resolution settings for when you save as a PDF.

Ah yeah, there is is. I guess I've seen that before but forgot.
Can you explain why would I want to change it or set it to something other than the default? |

I tend to change it when exporting for various purposes. My system seems to default to medium (150ppm) for some reason, so when I'm prepping labels to be sent to the printer, I make sure it's bumped up to 300ppm. While I want to use the same image on the website, I might reduce it.

Ahh, OK thanks. I almost never make a bitmap directly out of Illustrator, I open it in Photoshop if I need that. But it makes sense.

Illustrator does what I need for the winery, and I'm too 'thrifty' to buy both.

Thanks for your hard work over the years. I meant to point out that I knew that drawing in vector is better than raster. Thanks again,

Yeah no problem. I didn't mean to come off rude, just the thought of doing "drawing" in a bitmap program is foreign to me. Sure there are drawing tools in those programs but actual vector drawing programs is what that is made for. |

In most instances that I have come across, it is far better to be familiar with the drawing program and the printer you are using than to select a specific dpi.
I have seen certain settings in drawing programs lead to issues in print outs numerous times. For example, a technician setting thicker line weights to try and make lettering appear more bold, with the results that vertical lines of the lettering appear thicker than the curved lines. Another consideration is the medium you are printing on. For the Mylar transparencies I use for screen printing, printing at too high of a dpi level will lead to smudging in an inkjet printer, but might be okay in a laser jet.
