Vintage Estes Astrocam build

I know, these last couple are not real builds, but they are vintage :o I am just cruising through the 1979 catalog trying to build these in order. This kit is in good condition that I bought off eBay for 20 bucks. I also have the complete kit with the big foot launcher. For some reason these kits never seem to go for much on eBay. Once again I will spray paint the Bt. white and the plastic with a glossy coat.

I've had two of those (one kit and one with a pre-built camera), and they performed well. I've always admired the box art, which also appeared on the cover of the 1979 Estes catalog. Is the community in the painting based on an actual town (Penrose or Canon City, Colorado, perhaps?)

I don't know where that box art came from, but I know it is the first Estes catalog I ever owned. That is why have collected all the kits from that catalog and building them. Man I have a long way to go. I did buy about 5 of those catalogs from this website......they were 5 bucks each. Also bought 2 of the 1979 Centuri catalogs.

Sorry Tbzep, I really like those launch platforms.

Thank you for posting the link to this source! 1979 was also the year that Centuri returned to their book-format catalog (with their new UFO Scout Ship gracing the cover) after abandoning it for a tabloid (newspaper) format in the mid-1970s.

I have the camera put together and sprayed a clear coat on the plastic for a glossy finish. The main Bt. is complete and has a coat of glossy white on it. I must admit, it was fun putting this together.....what memories. A little more info on the picture that is shown on the box and the cover for the 1979 catalog. It is a picture that was enlarged to 5 X 7, residential section of Canon City Co. located near Estes Industries. Launched from a large parking lot. Mid afternoon in the Spring of 1979 using a completely stock AstoCam 110-Delta II rocket combo.

Interesting...judging by the street layouts visible in the AstroCam photograph and the MapQuest map, the camera was looking ESE when the photograph was taken. Is the red star on the map the actual launch point, or just the "sub-viewer point" on the map?

scigs30 01-29-2010 10:33 PM

I don't know where the red dot came from. I am just guessing the picture was taken somewhere around there. The area I picked is the only area with the curved streets.
