My second ESAM-58 built

My first HL ESAM-58 was olive green, but the Rust Stop Rustoleum I did not spray very well and I was not happy with the finish. This ESAM-58 was painted to match the face card computer generated color scheme...….I sure do miss the actual built model on the face cards. I think I have bought about 4 of these kits at HL since they are so cheap. I built this rocket in a few days using Krylon Acryli Quik paints, and 3 coats of Brodak Balsa sealer on the fins.

At the same time, I picked up a couple of Baby Bertha kits at HL and built one to try Rustoleum Professional spray paint. Chris on his model rocket blog page has been trying this paint with good results. I built the Bertha in one day, next day primed followed by sanding the fuzzies from raised grain and shot another coat of primer a hour later. Hour later, sanded smooth and shot the Gloss white in the same day. I let this dry 48 hours, masked with cheap masking tape and shot Gloss Black. No attempt was made to fill the balsa grain. When I shot the gloss black, I had some debris get on my paint job from a near by tree. This paint dries so fast I was able to wet sand the debris and shoot a final coat of gloss black while staying in the 1 hour window. So far this paint appears to work much better than other Rustoleums paints I have used, and it is super glossy and has great coverage. Also for not doing any prep work with the fins, this rocket actually looks good from a foot away. The grain really pops out when you get close to the rocket as you can see from my pictures. Still, not bad if you want a fast build and don't mind the grain.

I don't think you're allowed to build more than one stock Baby Bertha. The rest have to be Gooney'd. I think Estes must have sold a couple thousand a few years ago with the Goony fad hit hard on YORF/TRF.

I was also surprised how fast it dries, but still has same recoat window, 1 hour or after 48 hours.

Great job, beautiful.

Some of the new paint formulations coming out are truly amazing. I have not tried the Professional line, other than I bought a can of it in silver (actually called stainless steel) It was a “bonus” can and was a bit taller, and had a few extra ounces of paint. Very smooth finish after it dries.

If you like metallics, try the Rustoleum metallic blue (its in the “Stops Rust” line). Maybe the best I’ve used for brilliant, even color. Their metallic black night and metallic charcoal (looks like an automotive metallic gray) are also very good. I see they have a metallic green, but I’m pretty heavily stockpiled on Testors and Model Masters greens.

David,
How did you like that particular Rustoleum ”bonding”primer? I’ve bought a number of different Rustoleum primers and had good luck with all of them, in terms of drying quickly, and sanding easily. But you never know, they have more versions of primer than any other paint company, I think.

Actually, it was used by my wife for projects around the house but I tried it and like it. It has no recoat window, goes on smooth and sands easy without gumming up the sandpaper. I can sand after an hour of applying. So far it is working great. Other white primers are not very opaque, takes multiple coats or worse they have a recoat window.
