Stranger Things model rocket cameos

Some model rockets appeared on sets of "Stranger Things," Season 3, Episode 1. (All I've watched thus far.)

In Eleven's room, there's a completed MPC Pioneer 1 on a desk.

In Dustin's room, the box for the Pioneer 1 is on a desk, and there's a very brief appearance of an unpainted balsa and paper model that looks like one of the designs from the Centuri design manual.

Both these would be somewhat anachronistic in 1985. The Pioneer was last produced in 1972 or thereabouts, and Centuri was out in 1983 . . . although presumably small-town hobby shops might have had old stock lying around, or maybe an older brother had a stash of kits waiting to get built.

Yup, I saw that as well and also thought the timeline was off for those designs. Neat to see them included though!

Season 3 is out? I see a binge watching session in my near future.

I'm actually surprised there are model rockets on the set. The Duffer brothers were born in the mid 80's, so the age we tend to get into rocketry was already heavily dominated by game consoles and personal computers in the mid 90's. Model rocketry was at a pretty low point on a kid's radar. I guess the brothers deferred set decor to older folks.

Could be a signifier that Dustin (who also has a fancy shortwave outfit, and spent the summer at inventor camp) is a nerdier than average kid who isn't satisfied with video games.

Well sure.

In the 70's, I had a friend with a Atari 2600 but we couldn't afford one. Besides, Mom's tended to tell us to "go outside" if we were in to long.

In the 90's, I dated a woman with kids and introduced her boys to rocketry.

About 2009 I got back into it myself.

I watched a few episodes last night and noticed those models right away. When I commented on them my wife said she didn't see them at all. Having lived that era like a lot of us I am probably more critical of the details and realize they have to draw a line on authenticity somewhere. I'm just glad they included some rockets. They could have just as easily covered the desk with snap tite model cars and legos.

Spoiler Alert

I've learned with these shows not to be hung up on specifics of the timeline but to enjoy it for what it is: entertainment. Otherwise one would ask the bigger question of how a huge facility of Russian scientists and soldiers could be built and operated under a shopping mall in the middle of the American Heartland.
BTW I like the new character, Robin. That girl has spunk.
Cheers.
