Was it an Estes Firing Line RTF or one of the Cox RTFs? I did like those all-plastic RTFs pretty well; it's the current Estes ones that don't do much for me. I think it's the aesthetics--the Firing Line and Cox RTFs were all scale (or scale-looking), while the gaudily-decorated Estes RTFs of today strike me as looking more toy-like.
