While the Pacer suffered from the double quality whammy of being born at the lowest point of Detroit quality - the mid 70's - and being born of the lowest quality North American car maker - AMC - its biggest problem was being ahead of its time.
You need only fast forward 10 years, and you'll see that a Taurus wagon looked very much like a stretched Pacer. By then, its bulbous, aerodynamic styling with lots of glass were in vogue.
