I love sanding.

Here is a picture of it’s current state of completion. I may substitute an Estes 3” nose cone, it’s closer to scale length, and better fit to the thinner clear payload section. I also don’t like the launch lug and standoff, may add rail guides on new standoffs.

This model is 54mm main tube, 3” payload, and has a 38mm motor tube.

The big X-Ray looks great Lee. Always loved the X-Ray. What type of glue did you use for the fin fillets that dries in that dark brown color or is that a filler that you added to epoxy?

A good friend built the X-Ray in the late 90s. He had it sitting in the attic of his machine shop. We were up in the attic about a year ago looking for something and I saw the X-Ray. I hadn’t seen it in over 20 years. It is in great shape, was hardly even dusty. He gave it to me and said he’d like to see it finished. I’m finally getting around to it.

Regarding the epoxy, it’s a clear red color. I seem to recall some epoxies we used back then having a distinct color. Maybe it was to identify different cure times? I just don’t remember.

I have discovered that the body tube is a couple inches too long, as is the clear payload tube, by about 4 inches. He may have done that on purpose, to balance the look, since the nose cone is also too long. The Estes 3” cone is close to a perfect scaleup, so I’ll use one, and cut down the tubes.

In January I flew a two-stage successfully, using a 50 year-old B14-0 (datecode December 1969), staging to a “new” B6-6 from 1993. Very cool liftoff! Love those flames on the B14s. I’ve posted this picture before, but worth reposting.

That is a fairly impressive flame display for a B motor and daytime conditions. I mention that latter condition because at near-dark, a measly ol' A8 motor will put out a 'visible' flame that is really hard to believe for such a small amount of propellant. Larger motors, even more so under those conditions.

I've only flown one 'true' B14, but that was back in the mid-90s and it was so quick (no photographs either), I don't even recall any memory of the 'flame' at all. It was a '68 vintage Estes B14. Worked fine.

What model is that? By chance a Centuri (or Semroc) Arcon-Hi?

Earl, its just a scratch-built 2-stage. The rocket left the pad so fast that I would not have been able to tell you what the flame looked like! I saved a frame of the video that captured the flight.

This was at a beautiful soccer field in Denver area. Met and flew with Ed Mitton (Blastfromthepast here on YORF), and some of his fellow flyers, and a flyer friend of mine. I’ve known Ed from his blog and here for some time, but had never met.

The upper stage got its streamer tangled in one of the fins and landed in a sand pit nose down, and messed up the top 1/4” of the tube. I trimmed it and gave it a new paint job.

As I mentioned elsewhere, all my restorations are on my own rockets!
