Pretty sure the original ones were yellow. Even the 1970 Estes catalog, the first to list the Porta-Pad, states that it was yellow plastic.

See catalog page here: http://www.ninfinger.org/rockets/no...a/70est100.html

Not sure when they switched to orange, but probably very early 70s.

I did a bunch of old catalog research when I went on a GSE-collecting kick some years ago. The first Porta-Pads were yellow, and appeared in the 1971 and 1972 catalogs that color. Then red. Orange 1975-1981. Then in 1982 it was revised to be lower and wider and was black through 1986, then red for two years.

The Porta-Pad II first appeared in the 1989 catalog and it was yellow. They went black in 1997.

To get back on topic: I have a frame grab of a Nova Payloader flying off of an Electro-Launch on a White Lighting Q-Jet:

Interesting chronology.
I have two orange ones from the 70's and two black "E" pads.
What I really want is a repro Centuri LIA-100. Easily handles thru H power.

It's relatively easy to do that sort of thing since Estes has almost all their old catalogs posted on their web site.

Hi Bernard,
I have the yellow and the orange original Porta-Pads, plus the black and the red lower standing Porta-Pads, but I have never seen an original tall Porta-Pad in red. Do you or anyone else happen to have one of those tall red ones? If so, could you post a photo of it to show what shade of red it is please? Thanks for the information!

Kind regards,
Jeff Jenkins

Jeff,

It doesn't look like I have a red one of the original tall type, just an orange one like GH recalled. Sorry.
