Default Low altitude or no altitude rocketry idea of mine

I was about to fall asleep when a new rocketry idea occurred to me. It would take a rocket like a Mars Lander with legs. You would have to increase the weight of the Lander until the thrust from the rocket engine was just enough to lift the Lander a few feet into the air and there it would hover until there was no more thrust. Obviously the flight would not last long. Might be fun to watch and also would allow flights in your front yard.

I would worry about stability; what would keep it from going sidewise.?

I actually had this kind of happen once with an Estes two stage Longshot. I launched the second stage by itself with an A8-3. It go off the pad about 10 feet, hung there for a while, then the chute deployed right before it fell over. Decided that flying a bigger, heavier rocket on too small of an engine was not a good idea.

Default 2 stage fiasco

I once put gun powder above the ejection charge of an engine trying use a regular engine as a 1st stage engine. I was trying to lengthen the time the 1st stage lasted with the hope that the gun powder would ignite the engine above it. It failed and the rocket returned without the benefit if a parachute.

If you try a B6-6 or C6-7 with the clay ejection cap removed in the BOOSTER stage of a 2-stage rocket, you get an exciting flight.
That way the upper stage will be pointed DOWN toward terra-firma before ignition of upper stage.
Results in a quality POWR-PRANGG impact.
Needless to say this would be a safety code violation and is NOT recommended.
Saw it happen once in the late 70's where a buddy mistakenly put a B4-6 in the booster and a B14-0 in the upper stage. At about 100' AGL the B14 fired with the rocket pointed straight down into asphalt.

Yes, there is such a thing as NORMAL
, if you have to ask what is "NORMAL" , you probably aren't !

Failure may not be an OPTION, but it is ALWAYS a POSSIBILITY.
ALL systems are GO for MAYHEM, CHAOS, and HAVOC !

I saw exactly the same thing happen many years ago.
