Staging Question
I am looking into my first boosted rocket using a Semroc Texas Firefly. Booster and sustainer have engine hooks. The field I fly on is small to medium so I don't want to go to high. Can I go with a B6-0 and a A8-3 for motors? I only have B and C's for the boosters. This is new to me so just trying to get it right.

B6-0 to B6-6 is the lowest power recommended combination in the instructions - I’m guessing the delay on an A8-3 is going to be a bit short and maybe zipper the second stage. The only recommended motor for flying it single stage is a B6-5 so I’m guessing the sustainer is fairly efficient if it needs that delay. Maybe an adapted 13mm A3-4 or -6 might work for the sustainer? No idea whether that’s a viable solution, just taking a WAG at the problem…

Maybe try an A8-5 in the sustainer?
Also, OpenRocket is free. Modeling stuff usually works pretty well. |

That’s where I would go - A8-5 in the upper stage.

Way better choice than my idea - the 13mm A3 peaks out about half the thrust of an A8, probably just enough juice in an A3 to send the second stage sideways 😏

I recently launched a 2 stage with a B6-0 to A8-5, though it was bigger than the Texas Firefly, it did not go over about 400ft and recovered not too far away. This was also in a small area.

I don't think a Texas Firefly would go much over 500' on a B6-0 to A8-5.
You could use an A8-3 but it will eject below apogee moving upward at a pretty good clip. It would shred a chute, but if you're using a streamer for recovery you will be ok.

Thanks everyone, I think I will give that B6-0 to A8-5 a go on my field. Much appreciated.

I've successfully flown the Texas Firefly on a A8-0 / A8-5 combination. Staging occurs right off the pad. A satisfactory flight.

Years ago they made 1/2A6-0's.
That would probably stage on the ROD.
