If Leo Nutz has any Coldpower Convertible motors and accessories to spare, your "Der Red One" might be an ideal model for it (and there'd be no burning propellant or ejection charge particles to mar its paint scheme!). Also, have you flown a boost-glider successfully yet? (I remember your thread, "Semroc Hawk: I suck at gliders": http://www.oldrocketforum.com/showt...ht=suck+gliders ). I'm not asking that to raise embarrassment--Estes' Tercel (see: www.acsupplyco.com/estes/tercel_boost_glider.htm [it uses 13 mm mini motors]) and Squirrel Works' X-RV (a good Centuri X-24 "Bug" semi-clone: http://www.squirrel-works.com/glider.html [it uses 18 mm motors]) should be easy to trim for good glide descents.

Yes, indeed. Although I’m thinking it might have been his evil twin, Wilhelm.

Like Sigmund in "Sigmund and the Sea Monsters," Wernher had two brothers, Sigismund (a year older) and Magnus (seven years younger); my guess is that Sigismund was the evil one. :-) Magnus--who spoke the best English--contacted the American forces to surrender the Peenemünde group because, as he said, "I was the most expendable." (Wernher's entire name was Wernher Magnus Maximilian von Braun--I suspect that his mother may have taken full advantage of that long moniker when necessary: "Wernher Magnus Maximilian von Braun, come downstairs this instant!" :-) )

I have several gliders built that I haven't flown... mostly due to the lack of a field.

I'm in the same situation with respect to a flying field (in addition to needing either a semi-supine portable chair or a radio-activated remote ignition system so that I could follow the models' ascents, being bent over).

After some reconsideration (I've had years, you see) I've renamed this one "Der Redship Max."

Amazing how much improvement there has been in phone cameras since last I photographed this one.

I'm planning to fly it next year, with any luck, at a launch near Macomb, IL; or possibly at the spring launch of the Fairfax group up near Cedar Rapids IA.

Here's a back view, which shows the body alignment key I added.

As the Der Red Max instructions say (after certain construction steps), "Wunderbar!" Unlike the Maxi-Brute V-2 kit--painted with the forest camouflage scheme shown in the catalogs--you won't have any problem seeing Der Red One, in the air or on the ground. I'd almost hate to risk blemishing that paint scheme, but rockets are built to be flown! As long as you have a nice, grassy raketenflugplatz (rocket flying field), it should be fine. Also:

I have two surprises (or rather, "groups" of them) for you; one is Reply #16, *here* (see: https://www.oldrocketforum.com/show...5900#post265900 ); the other "group" will be along shortly (if you're still living in the..."Let me have a look" state...).

As noted in my mission control post regarding last night's launch at Macomb, Illinois, I have finally flown this.

First, the good news: The rear ejection method works, and the rocket's upper body does return nose down. The fragile wing-fins were undamaged, and my method was thus vindicated. But...

Now the bad news: The wadding didn't clear from the tailcone, and as a result hot gasses remained in contact with the tailcone too long. It is now deformed on the "bottom" surface, and does not fit correctly into the upper body tube.

Given that the kit is out of production and thus pricey, I won't be replacing the tailcone; and given that it is not a mere "cone" but an odd curved flattened thing I won't be making an entirely new one. At this point my plan is to cut off the shoulder, measure and possibly remodel the remaining bit, and 3D print a new shoulder to fit it. I will then line the tailcone somehow with a paper body tube, possibly protected with aluminum foil.

Gah. Seems like a lot of work...
