Estes Energetics? (new firm)
Hello All,
I apologize in advance if the following information is "old news" here on YORF. (In addition to keeping up with Alaska Housing's and my landlady's requirements, to keep my apartment "HUD-Kosher," I joined our local Pioneer Air Museum [see: https://www.pioneerair.museum/ ] and have been helping them get documentation on local--including just a few blocks from me, on Fort Wainwright!--Skyhook-type, plastic film stratospheric balloon launches.) Anyway: Estes Industries, I just found, has created a spin-off company called Estes Energetics (see: https://estesenergetics.com/ [and here is more about the new company: https://www.prnewswire.com/news-rel...-301319092.html ]), whose mission is to design, develop, and produce "the real thing"--rocket motors (I wonder if they'll call them "engines," too? :-) ) for aerospace applications, and: That could range from small emergency aircraft bailout parachute "pilot extractor tractor rockets" (and/or light plane ballistic parachute extractor rockets) to guided missile, sounding rocket, and satellite launch vehicle final stage, stage spin-up, and stage separation/retro rocket motors (and perhaps later, larger lower-stage rocket motors and/or strap-on booster motors for ballistic missiles and/or satellite launch vehicles [maybe made as ODM--Original Design Manufacturer--products made under license from the OEMs--Original Equipment Manufacturers--rocket motor producers], as Nammo in Norway produces ODM rocket motors for U.S. and UK guided missiles under license, as an Alternate Supplier). However they are--or will be--doing it, Estes Energetics is an interesting new development.

We've known for a while.
https://oldrocketforum.com/showthre...stes+energetics Estes also bought Goex, which shut down for a short period before the purchase. I'd heard they were shutting down and bought several cans, but Estes saved the day for the rest of us.

That's old news from over a year ago, and it was more a fire than an explosion. Not like the plant blew up...

Recent announcement. Estes has a partner in getting Goex restarted.
Defense Department Invests to Re-Establish Domestic Production of Critical Propellant AUG. 10, 2022 The Department of Defense’s Industrial Base Support (IBS) office, through the Defense Production Act (DPA) Title III authority, is supporting a Louisiana facility that produces black powder, a widely used propellant in artillery, firearms, rocketry, pyrotechnics*and numerous weapons systems. The $3.5 million investment by the Department of Defense (DoD) will allow the facility, owned by Estes Energetics, through its Goex subsidiary, to reopen after an accident shut down production. The total cost of the project is $5.3 million over two years, and it will allow production to resume at the Minden, Louisiana facility in two years or less. This investment will bring a critical defense industrial base asset back to production status and help Goex modernize the facility with the intent of reducing operational risk and improving safety. Goex is currently the only American source of black powder, which also has commercial applications in model rockets, muzzleloading firearms, fireworks, and other industrial processes. “The Department of Defense’s DPA Title III Program Office continues to deliver on its mission of reshoring and re-establishing domestic production of materials critical to our nation’s national security needs and strategic interests,” said Halimah Najieb-Locke, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Industrial Base Resilience. “We are pleased to have the opportunity to support this U.S. company as it works to restart the American-based supply chain of this important propellant.” The investment will also allow Goex to hire up to an additional 30 workers in Louisiana. |

I agree. And great evidence of the real benefit to our hobby of Estes being owned by someone with major experience in dealing with federal programs and agencies. When you read that news release you get a good idea of how much work is going to be done to upgrade Goex, and why that would benefit so many in both our hobby and others, as well as the defense department. Truly a vision we would never have expected from any prior owner of Estes. |
