Default New Rocket Buddy

I have a new buddy. My son, Kody (Intruder on YORF), ran into some pet issues with his new home in TX and had to give up his best buddy. They brought him to TN last weekend. He's been getting used to his new family and surroundings this week. Kody rescued him in TX, so I don't know much about his life history before about three or four years ago. He's an awesome buddy, athletic, and well behaved. Tonight, he explored the rocket cave for the first time. After thorough investigation of the rocket cave, he approved of the manly mess and took himself a good nap. He's a Belgian Malinois, like Conan in the news recently.

Congratulations on your new buddy! I'm a pet lover and will always have them, they are always a family member to me.

Malinois' are impressive dogs and always leave me in awe. Perhaps one day I will have one.

A month ago my wife said she wanted a dog to be a counter part to our cat, I got her a Rough Collie. He's about three and a half months old now, he is a joy.

Looks like he has a mouth full of 'balsa manglers'! Good you are starting out with the tennis ball.

Beautiful animal. They become one of family pretty quickly....

Beautiful dogs. I suspect you will be getting lots of exercise from this point forward, if you weren’t already.

He looks like a great pal !
Glad you were able to welcome him into your family.
Now if you could train him to recover rockets without crimping body tubes....

More exercise? Yes. We are both exhausted and want a nap every evening. Some of our play time will be exchanged for trips out on the farm to feed the cows, mend fences, etc. pretty soon. That's easy compared to trying to exercise him.

As for recovering rockets, he doesn't chew on the ball until we are done playing. However, when he brings it to me, it's covered in extra slick slobber. I'd have to waterproof my models first!

A good Dope or Epoxy finish IS waterproof.

I paint with lacquer when I can. It would be my luck that he'd grab it at the end and the unfinished internals would get slobbered. The chutes would be mangled anyway. I've had kids destroy them letting them drag behind the rockets catching rocks, sticks, etc. as they ran with them. I've got a few old Generic E2X rockets that were damaged at school launches. I may throw one around with him. His slobber will definitely soak through those unfinished white tubes. lol

I generally soak the top (nose end) 2" of tube with 50/50 thinned Clear dope and whatever I can of the bottom (engine end) of tube as well.
The Clear Dope (use butyrate, NOT Nitrate) hardens the tube as well as water-proofs it.
The reason for NOT using Nitrate dope is obvious as it is Nitrocellulose based and ignites easily and burns very hot. Not something you want exposed to rocket exhaust gases or ejection gases.
I do this step BEFORE finishing the exterior of the rocket.
You don't want to do it after as thinned dope can penetrate the entire tube, which would bubble/craze an enamel finish.
