To all who have fallen in defense of our freedoms, those known and unknown, we salute you today.
May we never forget the extreme price that has been paid in blood for the freedoms we enjoy today. Earl

Sorry, For Late Reply
Yes, Earl: Perfect
I've met one of the fallen: SPC Kenneth Hess: Rawah, Iraq April 2006 Calvary Scout in the US ARMY. I lived in Anchorage for a second time 2000 thru 2008. While there my son who was in the ARMY eventually was stationed at Fairbanks Alaska, after his first tour in Germany and a deployment to Kuwait/Iraq. He joined the military, completed training and went thru Baltimore 1-week before 9/11, on his way to Germany. While stationed at Fairbanks his unit transitioned into the Stryker Armored Vehicles. To do this transition his unit was sent to Anchorage for the training. His was the first group to conduct the training. Once trained they were deployed to Iraq as a unit. I lived 2-blocks from the best Bar in Anchorage, Chilkoot Charlies. Was living in a one bedroom apartment. My son and all of his buddies ended up spending a few nights crashed at my place, getting up and heading to the base for training the next day. I got to meet most of his unit. Once my son was trained, they needed a SGT to help train the other squads coming down for training. His 1st SGT chose my son to do this. So, got to meet them all! I met the 1st SGT at 'Koots, we talked, he was happy to find I was a Cav Scout back in the 70's. Might have had something to do with my son staying back, when his squad went back to Fairbanks. Talk about a special privilege, did a little suds down the hatch with them all as well. While in Iraq, the Company found a huge stash of buried artillery rounds to be used for I.E.D.s. You probably didn't see the photos, not something the MSM would show. I saw the photos from a military newspaper. Within a few days, his unit was targeted for the find by a suicide bomber. Team was in a Stryker, the LT in charge decided to do a 3-man dis-mounted patrol. Spc. Hess was in the front (point man) the Lt was next and my son was third in line. That's when they got hit. April 2006 (keep getting confused on date as the call I received from the military was different due to the different time zones). Kenneth was KIA instantly, the Lt survived but had to have major surgery to his brain, my son spent several months in different military hospitals, including Walter Reed, before returning to work. It truly hurts when I see how people in the USA are treating our Flag. Mike Last edited by mbauer : 06-14-2020 at 05:49 PM. |

Even the people in the USA that call other people "privileged" mostly to demean them, are themselves very privileged to live in a country that, if they choose to and work hard, could succeed, thrive, and prosper. Instead they choose to blame others while getting fat on other people's hard earned money. They will never respect the flag. Unfortunately, that number grows every day. The numbers of us that do understand, whether directly, or by growing up and learning from parents of the greatest generation, are getting smaller every day. We are becoming small enough in number that our voice doesn't count for much anymore. My heart aches for my children and future grandchildren.

I’ve expressed basically the same sentiment to my wife. We will be gone before things potentially get so bad, but I worry for our kids, and even scarier, what will it be like for our grandkids (ages 1,3,9,12)?
