Default Estes Flutter-By Build

Here are the last 3 kits I received, now I have them all. The Chutter 2 I received sometime ago, but I wanted to show the plastic nose that came in the kit. I am not complaining by any means, but it is funny this kit came with a plastic nose and the Satellite Interceptor came with the same nose in balsa wood. Either way I am happy. The Flutter By comes with a new nose that is made from plastic. A closer look and it resembles the PNC-50X that is used the The Bat. There is a little shape change, but not much. You can see the original PNC-50X on my Bat and the Balsa BNC-50X from my Vintage Sprint kit. This should be a fun build and more pictures to follow.

Never noticed this before but I find the Bat image quite resembles the gargoyle on bottles of Arrogant ******* Ale. Am I right?

Back on topic, be sure to put something in the images of the Flutter By to show how small that little bird truly is.

The Chuter-Two's plastic nose cone is (I think) the same 11 degree BT-50 plastic nose cone that was originally produced (along with a plastic nozzle) for the Estes Black Brant III kit (not their larger "D"-powered Black Brant II). Regarding the Flutter-By's new plastic nose cone, I would not be upset if Estes re-created the Centuri nose cone shapes in new plastic nose cones made for Estes' tubing sizes. When I get a hankering for *exact* clones of Centuri kits, I can always get resin duplicates of the "Type C" plastic nose cones from Sirius Rocketry's "Moldin' Oldies" product line.

Wow, the two part nose cone is back!

Excellent for those models that need nose weight - it's easy to install before cementing the base.

Lots of cool kits. Neat-o.

This is a straight forward build, built it in one night. I first sanded the balsa sheet and shot 3 coats of Plastikote primer sanding in between coats. Then I built her per the plans. Today I am spraying the primer and hope to have her done tomorrow. The rocket next to the Flutter By is my Detla rocket.

I primed the Flutter -By today and will put the top coat on tomorrow. The white primer will be Old Krylon Banner Red and the Gray primer will be Krylon Silver.

I don't recall the original Flutter-By having strakes on the fins. I also thought the original used fiber fins?

This was a fun and easy build. I was worried about the bottom fins being glued to the engine tube and breaking off, so I used Epoxy. I used Estes color scheme and decal placement. The problem with the computer art is the decal does not fit were it shows it to be. You could raise the decal up a little and it will stay away from the bottom fins. Other than that, a fun build. P.s The launch lug is too long, the instructions show the 1 1/4 lug so that is what I used.

You are correct, the original did not have the strakes. I don't know if they were fiber or not.

The original Centuri Flutter-By had balsa fins, and (if memory serves) its fins had the same planform shape as the "Stellar Series" Spartan kit's fins. (The Spartan--which Semroc now makes as a "Retro-Repro" kit--was originally a balsa-finned prototype for the Centuri Screaming Eagle "KWIK KIT.")
