NAR S&T MOTOR DECERTIFICATION NEWS

Effective immediately, Estes E15 motors with date codes
of 13X10 and 15X11 are decertified for general and contest use.
In April 1994, Estes Industries officially recalled E15 motors
with these two date codes. MESS data collected by NAR Standards
and Testing since August 1994 substantiates this action.

Only these production lots are immediately decertified.
If you possess these motors, Estes asks that you contact your
local retailer for a product exchange in accordance with the recall
announcement issued by Estes to its distributors and retailers.

Due to a year long production hiatus, all other Estes E15
motors will lose contest certification on 1-July-95, except
for contest use at NARAM 37. General use certification will
expire in three years, on 1-July-98, per S&T decertification policy.

At the time these motors are reintroduced, they will undergo
a full certification test as if they were new, first-time motors.

NAR Standards & Testing

The Estes date codes are printed on the motor. I copied and pasted this from part 5 of the Rec.Models.Rockets FAQ on how to decipher the date codes:

5.12 How can I tell the age of my Estes motors?

Estes uses a date code on their rocket motors. It's of the form XXYZZ
(example, 25T9) where the first number is the day of the month of
manufacture, the letter is a code indicating year of manufacture, and the
last number is the month (1 = January, 12 = December). Date codes
run progressively through the alphabet, as follows:

T 1989
U 1990
V 1991
W 1992
X 1993
Y 1994
Z 1995
A 1996 - Estes cycled back to the beginning of the alphabet

In the early 70's, Estes motors had the actual date stamped on them.

This means the problem motors in that decert notice were made on October 13, 1993 and on November 15, 1993. I would contact Estes customer service if you have either of these dates. It's been a while but they may still come through for you and send you some D12 or E9's for replacements.

Default Found the numbers

With the help of my handy dandy magnifying glass I discovered.

E15-8 = 23X7 July 23, 1993
E15-6 = 22X9 September 22, 1993 both packs.

D12-0 = 25V11 November 25, 1991
D12-0 = 3U12 December 3, 1990 opened, taped closed pack.

From your entery:
'This means the problem motors in that decert notice were made on October 13, 1993 and on November 15, 1993. '

These are in the clear. Yeah.

Thanks for all the help, Alan

Default Those date codes

I don't think date codes are the only thing to worry about on black powder motors. Thermal cycling will kill them too.
I have the remains of a Super Vega in the basement I can't bear tossing out.
It was victim of an Estes E motor back in ummmm 93 or 94.
Total Cato blowout thru the side around the engine casing then the burning core went up through the rocket and popped the toasted chute with the rocket still on the launch rod.
Sorry guys, no pics or vid of the event are available.

I Still intend to rebuild that rocket one day. needs a new body tube, motor mount, chute.
Replacing the decals will suck.
Most of the fins/leg pods are intact. and all parts are saved.

Bummer about the Super Vega.

does not sound like too bad of a fix, if the fins are ok, just glue onto new tube, new motro mount , recovery system/ chute is a no-brainer....

Are the decals posted ? ( did not go look for myself, sorry, might in a few ), not sure if any white printing on those, otherwise pretty straightforward to do if the scans are up .

just back from the NEPRA launch where we got rained on, had a great time ( never did get to fly the only rocket I took, which was my repro FSI parts Enerjet 2250, still prepped and ready on 3 x E9-6's....) . Did help with a group project 7.7" bird with onboard video, M2500 - great flight and some awesome onboard footage....

also a few oldies flown, including an Estes ' NASA Pegasus' , good looking bird, but neglected to get the fliers info :-(. my bad.

need to bring some of my oldies out to the hpr launches, since ppl do get a kick out of seeing them ....

You might want to switch out those 6 second delay motors for some 8 seconds delay ones.
The 2250 is pretty lightweight, and deploying the recovery on the way up can be harsh.
I flew a LP Hawk a cluster of E9-8's.
I added 2-3 ounces of modeling clay in the nose for stability sake.

Nice Photo .

Will see if I have any E9-8's.... usually I'd use D12-7 over D12-5, but figured with the longer burn , less acceleration on the E's it would be ok on -6's - would definately be late on eject by a second than a second early, so point taken .
