Rockets Red Flare 7/4/2020
I like to fly something on the 4th, and yesterday was looking around for something Patriotic to fly. About 5 years ago I stumbled on a bunch of models being clearanced at Michael’s, including some ARFs, but they are hard to pass by at a few dollars. I got a Shooting Star which is a red white and blue BT-56 based rocket with the stick on decal already installed. I robbed its motor retainer for my Skywinder years ago. I plugged in the fins, tied on the chute and borrowed back the red retainer. I took it out this morning and it flew great on a B6-4. Then I flew a Red Flare on a D12-5, then a C11-3. Great flight on the D, the chute on the C was not out and the rocket tumbled down til around 20 feet when the the chute deployed in a shower of cellulose wadding. Finally I flew the Estes Cadet on a Q-jet B4-4 for a nice flight. The delay seems a bit long for the rocket, but it tail slid both flights so ejection was at low velocity.

Nice video of the Red Flare flight. The Shooting Star looks very patriotic perfect for Independence Day. It stormed down raining all day here in South Louisiana and it’s expected to rain the next five days straight so I envy your nice weather...and flying field.

I am fortunate the field is not far. So far it’s not heavily used early in the morning. I have lost rockets in the trees there, one I have no idea where it landed. I hope it dries out enough for you to fly! Last edited by 5x7 : 07-05-2020 at 09:43 AM. |

Good to see someone flying. Hot and dry here, but B6-4 Field has been taken over for what appears to be a girls softball tournament. They have a short temporary fence set up, so even if I managed to sneak up for an early morning launch it would be more of a pain than it was worth.

It’s frustrating to go to the field and find it’s being used. The field where I meet a friend had yoga going on, but fortunately left before we started setting up.

Nah. Temps in the 90's would have made any attempt at launching an exercise in misery. I felt bad for the players and spectators yesterday. It was pretty rough.

I have been going before 7 am. I also try to keep it pretty short, 3-5 rockets, because there is a multi use trail and I don’t want to bother anyone (too much).
