Xray
Finally found a pic of my first rocket on another forum. I built it sometime around 1974. It's still one of my favorites.

Awesome! Any chance it still exists? I thought that was so cool when I was a kid. It was the first payload section I'd ever seen, as well as the first transition. Painted mine Rocket Red and launched a metal ball from our old pinball machine from the front yard, but forgot to tape the nose cone on. For years I'd peek at the hood of any Plymouth Volare station wagon that I passed, but never saw one with a 1/4" dent in it. I really need to get another one and go with the old school paint job.

Just to be clear that's not my rocket. Someone on The Rocketry Forum posted it. It would make a fun scratch build.

Very cool. I always loved the X-ray and the color scheme with the stripes over the transition.

Looks like an easy clone from the plans here: http://www.spacemodeling.org/jimz/k-18.htm Fin templates and decal scan included. I like to order parts for clones from erockets. Huge selection of balsa parts, they usually have the ones I need. You can home print the decal scan on decal paper.

I think eRockets still has everything needed to clone it, including the decal. They had it as a kit for a long time, but it didn't survive. I believe they still make and/or have the ability to make the transition and nose cone.

Every time I hear of a kit being discontinued by the "new" Semroc, I miss Carl's Semroc.
Nowhere near the same.

Yeah, I know they have to sell kits to stay in business; that's the way it works. BUT, it is sad to see the number of Semroc kits that have been discontinued in the last year or so. Bunches.

The nose cone is the same as the (first few versions of the) Alpha - BNC-50K. The transition is the short TA-2050 (TA-2050A, I think). eRockets has them both. ASP also has them (these are BMS-made parts, I think, so BMS would have them as well). Note that the ASP/BMS nose cone is a bit rounded at the tip, more like an Alpha III nose cone than the original shape. In times past I would recommend the eRockets/Semroc parts in spite of their higher prices, but the level of finish on the parts from eRockets is nowhere near as fine as they used to be when they came from Carl/Sheryl/Bruce and company. So the main reason to get the nose cone from eRockets is that it's closer to the correct shape as originally used on the X-Ray....if one even cares about that. I cloned an X-Ray a few years ago using Semroc parts....but reliably getting a 'chute out of BT-20 coupled with friction fitting the motors makes it enough of a pain to actually fly it that it hasn't been flown very much.
