Default Namaste - Quick Saucer

In 2011 many of you may remember the big scoutstuff clearance where they rid their warehouse of thousands of bulk packs of motors. I got a few blast-off packs, each pack includes six C6-5s. In 2014 I was flying an Astrocam with one of the Cs and it catoed and took out the motor hook. We friction fit another C and it catoed and blew out the whole mount. We looked at the lot numbers and they were the same. We took a third of the same lot and taped it to rod resting on the pad upside down for a static test. It also catoed. The other three from that sale lot have been knocking around for years. With today being the fourth, I thought I would throw something together and take my chances, if it catoes, no big deal. This is Namaste, named for the restaurant the two takeout lids came from. The design is based on the Sqirriel Works Pie in the Sky, which flies great. The top is the inside part of two takeout lids. It uses a scrap of bt-20, an engine block/coupler sawed from an Estes B, and two retaining rings sandwiching the discs sawn from a D, and a QCR straw for a launch lug. There is a piece of paper towel in the center between the two discs. The thinking is to take the liquid from a light stick and wick it between the two discs so it can be flown and found on the ground if the motors behave.

5x7 That is a really good idea for your saucer, I like it!
Sounds like some pretty bad luck with the C6-5’s in the 2011 blast off pack.
BTW how was the Mango Chicken?

The mango chicken was great! I flew the motors from least likely to Cato to most likely, based on how the paper layers looked displaced in the casing near the grain when looking at the nozzle. They just didn’t look right on two of the motors. The first one actually put in a nice flight, I couldn’t find a glow stick but did find a flashing led lapel pin. The fastener of the led pin neatly nested in the top of the motor mount. It landed about 30 feet from the launcher In my backyard and I could see it after burnout because of the led. Flight two in the pitch dark- POW- the little led went for a ride, but the saucer fell right beside the pad, motor tube torn off, casing nowhere to be found. I am sick of these motors so for the last one I soaked it in water to destroy...just kidding, I dug a small hole and put the motor in nozzle up and fired it. POW! Nozzle was spit on that one, so 5 of the 6 from that bulk pack catoed. That one good flight was worth it.

I wonder if anyone actually does the soak in water thing? The saucer/spool method is a lot more fun!

I had a 13 mm motor that fell in a puddle and wasn't found right away. The casing became all wrinkly and slightly swelled and the nozzle started to crumble. I had it for a few years and decided to try it. It wouldn't fit in a normal 13 mm mount but I was able to get it in an Applewhite cardstock saucer, one of the free plans. Surprisingly, it worked. It didn't seem to be full thrust because of the nozzle but it was OK. Estes even acknowleges once soaked, when allowed to dry out the remains are flammable, so soaking destroys the motor but not the flammability.

Here are the aft ends of both catoed motor casings, I found the flight motor and the unwound motor tube in the grass today. Interesting the first Cato was out the forward end and the second lost the nozzle. The flight motor nozzle end is damaged from being smashed on the blast deflector which also left a dent. Beware of A071805!

If it was a flight pack of all C6-5's they were probably stored incorrectly vs there being an issue with that date code.

I agree they could have been stored poorly from 2007 to 2011 when I got them. I store them properly. However, since 5 of 6 of the C6-5s from that lot catoed, but the other 18 motors from that pack worked fine, including the C6-3s. Before flying the nozzle end of these 3 motors looked unusual to me, as if some of the paper layers had separated, as if the casing paper had glue dry spots. The motor that looked the best worked and the one that looked worst lost the nozzle. I addition to the 18 from the pack, I estimate I have flown about 100 A’s B’s and Cs from those sales and all the rest worked. I respect what you are saying but personally I wouldn’t trust that lot as far as I could throw it.

Ah, I didn't realize it was just a few of the motors out of the box.

Any chance those three motors got damp/wet on the nozzle end? I guess it would probably be somewhat evident if they had gotten blatantly wet (water stains on the case maybe), but that is a bit what it sounds like.
