Interceptors and siblings - mini Finless genetic engineering
So, as part of my Interceptor family of rockets, I wanted a BT-5 sized rocket. I have an Interceptor-style nose cone that I drew up, and printed one scaled at BT-5 size.
But, which rocket to use. I could simply make a downscale, but the family already has a bunch of look-alikes. So, I decided on some genetic engineering. I went through my records of recognizable rockets, looking for a base gene stock. I had a few criteria - it should already be BT-5 sized, it should evoke the wings, stabilizers, and skid. I should be able to tweak it easily enough to have pods and the pointy things on the stabilizers. And, I should be able to add decals easily enough. After lots of genetic comparisons, I selected a sufficient match. The mini Finless - a Design of the Month from July 1979. |

Here are the parts I started with.
And, jumping past the boring build stuff, the assembled and painted rocket. I ended up with something Doctor Moreau -ish. Kind of like how someone crossbred a chromosonally anomolous wolf with a cotton ball and ended up with a Pomeranian. Two of the tapered tubes were mutated into the Interceptor wings. The other tapered tube was mutated into the vertical stabilizer. The launch lug genes were spliced with the Interceptor's skid genes, giving the launch lug double-duty. And, just like some people have had teeth growing all over their body , I inserted more launch lug genes into its DNA so that it would grow lugs as pods and that pokey thing on the stabilizer. The poor thing shouldn't be left naked. I mean, it too has needs, even if they are special.
So, it too gets some decals. Then, the decals needed help. I laid them out not taking the printer's margins into account. So I reprinted some patterns on the same sheet. (Some say not to run the same laser printer decal sheet through the laser printer. I don't listen to such nonsense. Some of my decal sheets go through the printer 3 or 4 times to fully reuse the scraps.) |

That's an interesting embellishment to ordinary tube fins. Gives me some ideas...

And finally, a couple family photos.
