Yes, some print 'grain' lines can be seen in the closeup of the silver inter-stage section of the model in post #1. I've not handled any of this 3-D printed material in a long time, so I don't know how hard this stuff is to sand, but I could easily understand that it could possibly take some effort to get smooth. Some key thoughts about this kit.
The nozzles also serve as motor retainers, just put motors in and screw down nozzles to lock them in place. Special snap on clear fins for flight, with lock tie backup. No more cutting slits in to main body tube or sliding a hard to glue plastic one over the main body tube. Adjustable weight compartment in the Gemini Capsule itself. Very little painting due to full body skin. Very detailed Turbo pump assembly. Closer to scale motor tubes as compared to a BT70 based kit. Complete 2nd Stage assembly for display or show and tell. Just a few of the really neat stuff in this kit. Hope Alex follows it up with the Titan II icbm version or at least the icbm nose cone I would say the very best by far to date.

I would think two 24" chutes would be plenty as well.
30" seems like drift-off overkill.

When I built my Soyuz last year I had a really difficult time getting rid of the filament lines. I even used an automotive DA orbital sander and 80 grit disc with little effect. I did notice though, that as the plastic got older, it became easier to sand. Mine was made of ABS. I don't know what Boyce uses. I got it as smooth as I could and used high build primer. You can still see some lines close up, but for the most part it looks okay.
I can also tell you from experience that a hard impact will cause cracks at the filament joints. It might be prudent to reinforce the interior of the nozzle bells. That's what I did to the Soyuz boosters after they broke. As an extra measure I may install a short length of dowel in the bottom to take the brunt of the force just in case it happens again. As for the parachutes, twin 24's still seems a bit much for a model under one pound. My 20oz. big Alpha returns on a nylon 24" and still drifts off sometimes. My 16oz. Viper returns just fine with a nylon 18" as recommended by LOC. |

Here is a Couple of reviews for one of their newest kits the Nike Hercules Rocket Builders Kit 1/14th Scale.
“The quality of the 3D parts is very good, high resolution and strength. Boyce has been upgrading their equipment over the years and current offerings reflect this--most parts require only a cursory sanding, tiny details might need to be cut from a thin printed base, etc.” “I've been waiting for this model kit the Nike Hercules in The1/14 scale for a while now and I could not wait until I ordered it so I stayed up after 12 a.m. just so I could get my order in, I know from past rockets that I have purchased the quality and the attention to detail is outstanding and you cannot ask anything with more quality and that a great reasonable price their rocket models are awesome and I can't wait to get this one and add it to my collection, and if you're reading my review my suggestion is put your mind at ease an order this model you will not regret it or any of their models and help pass this around to anyone else you know that is into model rocketry” Might add, if you look at all their kit ratings, they have never received less than a max rating. I have Saturn 1 sa5, SA7, b1, Gemini capsule, Juno 1 capsule and feel the same way!

Just got my kit yesterday.
Parts look nice but they are going to take a bit of sanding to get smooth. Oh well. As far as motors go, I like to go high. They recommend the Aerotech D10-5 single use, but i thought that Aerotech was discontiuning all the D motors, what do you think would be a good substitute ? |
