Default Vintage Estes Maxi Alpha Build

My next build is the Estes Maxi Alpha, looks like a straight forward build and the parts are in good shape.

Very cool! I turned an Executioner into a Maxi Alpha a couple years ago with an E mount. It flies great on either D12 or E9. It is a beautiful bird in flight!

I just aquired all the parts to clone one of these, but after examining your picture, I think my nosecone isn't exactly right. This one seems a little shorter. Something to look into I suppose.

I was also planning on plywood through the wall fins and plywood centering rings along with a 29mm mount so maybe "clone" isn't the right word. High power replica might be more fitting. At any rate, she's a bute! Good luck and don't be stingy with the pics...

Don,

The original nose cone is a PNC-80K. SEMROC has the balsa equivalent BNC-80K. It is 8.2" long. I do have an original Maxi Alpha somewhere in the attic.

Have this clone in the que ( already cut fins, printed decals, just need to make time to work on it and the 5 dozen others ) .

will be watchign this one for inspiration.

question: a couple ppl mentioned cloning from the Executioner kit... is the Executioner BT80 ? I was under the assumption it was not BT80 based, but 2.5" ? ( old NCR tube ? )

From http://www.rocketshoppe.com/info/Es...be_List_3.1.pdf, page 16 (#1951):

BT-80 (two pieces). The lower piece is pre-slotted for the Executioner's TTW fins.

I have everything put together and the balsa is sealed with 3 coats of Aerogloss balsa sealer. I will wait for the fillets to dry then begin priming tomorrow. I really don't like trying to join two body tubes unless that is were the paint separation is supposed to go, just a PITB to have a seamless seam. If you are cloning this, you could buy a 36 inch Bt-80 from BMS.

This has been a slow build do to work, other hobbies and the rains. After 3 coats of balsa sealer, I sprayed a couple of coats of primer followed by Old Krylon Glossy White and Banner Red. I pretreated the decals with Liquid decal solution, but I still think big wrap around is going to be a pain. I am staying busy with my Freeflight builds and just got back into RC. This means my rocket builds will be a little slower, but thats Ok.

Nice looking AeroLectric there in the first picture. It's a sweet flier that would really be amazing with a current power system. The Alpha's not bad either .
