Comrades:

He was the cosmonaut we imagine when we think of the word. Crazy brave, had the Russians sent the November 1968 Proton/Soyuz as a manned mission around the moon, he almost certainly would have been the commander.

Prints of his art are generally available and although his style is different from Alan Bean's hyper-realism, there's nothing quite like space art from someone who was actually there. He became friends with many of the later cosmonauts and astronauts. He was one of the few remaining links to the great 1960's era of space exploration.

Of the original cosmonauts, only Valentina Tereshkova is still with us.

Yes, the trailblazers from both their and our countries are no doubt dwindling away.

And while he flew for the 'other side' (at the time), you can still certainly admire his accomplishments and bravery. Within the respective programs back in the day, that admiration (at least 'unofficially') seems to be evident from both sides for each other's accomplishments from what I have read, regardless of the 'official' government stance(s) on said accomplishments.

I feel fortunate to have been around (though young) during a good part of those early years and to have met some of those people in later years, at least on 'our' side (though I did meet a cosmonaut very briefly - a handshake - at an Apollo 11 25th anniversary dinner in DC back in '94. I don't even recall who he was, sadly).
