Default Upscaled Estes Scamp

I never built an Estes Scamp, but I did a set of cut-vinyl decals for a friend’s 3” Scamp. I liked the decals so much that I did my own moderate upscale to BT-60. (The original was BT-50 based.)

This was a pretty easy upscale. The original kit used a “50X” nose cone, also used in the Astron Sprint kit. The Astron Sprint XL from a few years ago was BT-60 based, so it could be used. The “60X” nose cone from this kit (along with tailcone) is also part of a 3-nose cone offering from Estes.

I had the nose cone/tail cone combo in my box of parts, plus a big assortment of tubes and centering rings, so I had most of what I needed.

Using a longer 24mm heavy motor tube and some wooden centering rings meant it was well-suited to fly on E12s or other 24x95mm engines.

Paint is Rustoleum 2X, in Gloss Black and Sun Yellow.

Looks good, Lee.

Sometimes simple works out nicely.

I always liked the Scamp but somehow never built one.

Thanks Bernard,

I have been on a nostalgia bent this past year, and mostly have built clones or upscales of old favorites, many of which I never had as a kid. The range from the Farside-X to Design of the Month favorites like the Tiger Shark. Also a drawn-out build of the Semroc 1:70 Saturn 1B. I wanted the Estes version badly as a kid, but never had the money. Probably just as well, it is plenty challenging, not sure I would have completed it when I was 12!

I too wanted the K29 Saturn 1B but could not talk my Dad into it.
First ventured into rocketry in 1978 the year after the K29 was discontinued, but was still widely available for a couple years after in my area.
Dad got me the K41 Mercury Redstone instead. Both of us found that escape tower to be a nightmare. 1979 was the year and I was 9. Not sure I would do better with it now.
That kit was the ONE Estes kit deserving a Skill level 5.

The Semroc kit includes both built-up fins (balsa framework and cardstock skins) like the Estes kit, and laser-cut balsa. I am going old-school.
It also has the option of a 24mm engine mount, or 4x18mm cluster, like the Estes. I am going old school all the way! I’ll deviate slightly on capsule. The wood and cardstock capsule will be for display, I’ve got an Apogee Capsule kit for flight. Easier to replace if damaged! (I only one to build the old-school capsule once!)
