Default New Estes kit for 2023 - So Long #9722

Got this from my local hobby shop. Info on the new Estes kit #9722 - So Long. Due in early 2023. For those that are eagle-eyed, this was the kit sneak-previewed in one of the Estes NARCON presentations earlier this year.

Interesting. My guess is that it's made of full-length tubes from the same stock that the 29mm motor tubes in other PSII kits are made.

1.21" is the O.D. of typical 29mm motor tube, sometimes referred to as BTH-52. It'll be a fun, and accurate name to announce when launching. Seems like it must be a new nose cone, which will be nice, the only other minimum diameter PNC I'm aware of is the Apogee one, and it's for thin-walled 29mm tube.

I've launched 2" PSII rockets with the booster, and they are really too heavy for the F15-0, requiring a long launch rod and perfectly calm day. Now we need a smaller Chute Release!

Wow! My guess as to the previous highest flying Estes rocket would be #2067, Delta Clipper.
Two stages, minimum diameter for D Motors.

At list price there’s not much incentive for this one - from an online discounter at $27-29 it’s a definite maybe. I like the size and if it’s light enough for adapted 24mm D motors that’s a lot of flexibility at a 33% off price. Do we know if the streamers are fabric or plastic?

I'd use a sturdy aluminized mylar streamer.

And fly on a sunny day so the fluttering mylar would "flash" reflecting the sunlight.

Do that with all my high flying contest models that do not need to land softly, and most high flying sport models that use streamers.

George,

Very good advice. On my F Altitude and F Payload Altitude record flights I used 20 foot long aluminized kapton streamers. The F-Altitude flight went over 6600 feet. At altitude, that long streamer could just barely be seen as a glinting speck in the sky. As it fell the streamer became increasingly visible. As you recommend, flown on a very bright sunny day in a cloudless sky.

I love altitude and am really pleased to see Estes pushing the boundries on this one. Great looking kit.

I have done something similar with 'happy birthday' mylar banners from The Party Store - though not that high (!)

I will admit that I lost the rocket (at Bong). My son's L1 flight launched next, and I pivoted to help track it. I had named my rocket 'Launch It and Lose It'.
