Post your vintage builds and pics
Just wanted to say how much I enjoy this forum. I am 58 years old and started my first run in model rocketry in 1975. I have been in and out of the hobby several times and am currently back in, deep! I love seeing pics of everyone's builds and would like to ask members to please post pics of vintage builds and vintage pics of their rocketry days. With the daily dose of misery we get from news, etc. those pics take me back to simple days. Mid 1970's and working on an Estes Astron Shrike in the garage, the smell of sanding sealer, and that used model rocket engine smell, good stuff. Sorry to ramble, just thinking about the old days.

I think that is a VERY good summary of why many of us are here! I've never attacked an Astron Shrike on the build table (yet!), but I can relate with a number of Centuri models...and a pretty good smattering of Estes kits, too! Earl

We were in grade school then, and flew a Shrike (into a tree) in fall of 1975. But welcome! Even with your dubious taste in football clubs.

Welcome back! Here's a couple builds I did back around 1975, photos taken in 2007, and I still fly them. (... and no, I don't know why the Gyroc thumbnail is sideways...)

I have one rocket that could be called a classic. It is my only rocket to survive from the 70s. It is a Saros, which I built in 1976. It last flew in the lates 90s. I took it to NSL-2018 in Geneseo, NY. Both Vern and Gleda Estes signed it. It was officially retired on that day.

The Astron Shrike is a long BT50 two stage rocket.
I have a vintage Estes kit in my collection and a built Semroc one. Up until fairly recently, Semroc offered a clone. At one point I believe PDR and Rocketpad cloned it also.

The Astron Shrike, besides being tall, used the new “plug-in” staging. No more taping the booster and upper stage motors together. It had nicely detailed nozzle shrouds, and a lot of decals. One of my more memorable builds.
