Upscaled Tazz (Revisited) Now with a full day's supply of vitamin BT-80!
Parts are in.
I'm not a rocket scientist, I only play one on the internet so I'm doing rudimentary math to guesstimate proper scaling to make this function as a Tazz. I'll keep bumps on topic and limited to progress made. I may experiment with a 3 fin version on either a BT-50 or BT-60 donor to see if it would be a better choice before I commit on the BT-80 tube. I'm also experimenting with a "floating" nose cone using a spring and/or foam to absorb shock on landing. Stay tuned.... |

BT- 53g (x2)
NC- 51g Coupler- 10g Completed motormount (estimated) 27g Balsa- 1/8"x6"x12"- 26g Basswood- 1/8"x6"x12"- 65g Completed wings (estimated): Balsa- 39g (x2) Bass- 97.5g (x2) So with all balsa I'm at 272g, with all Basswood it's 389g. That's before glue and paint. I usually dope balsa to strengthen it and I honestly don't know what the weight penalty for that is. Can anybody list some weights for their larger rockets and what the minimum motors are? Thanks. Edit: yes I can run Sims and I have but I have quite a few that are "unsafe" and yet they launch without issue (Mr. Twisty is one) so I was looking for some real world numbers. |

Here is a cross section of the larger models in my fleet with weights listed in descending order.

I was planning on buying a laser cutter.....but haven't yet.
So this is a product of my love. Everything is cutout now. Laminated the rings and I'll sand them out tomorrow maybe. I scaled out the 2.6" BT and dropped 35g's. Cut the coupler in half and dropped another 5g's. Used balsa instead of the Basswood so I'm looking good overall. I figured out that "half moon" lock rings were a waste of material but 1/4 rings are a good use of remnants so I'll adjust templates for TWISTED's SISTER and scale down for a simplified version of Mr. Twisty. Main body- 123g Fins- 60g Motor mount-25g So pre dope/paint I'm at 208g |

Anybody know if theres anything in the regs to prevent me from doing a high power qualification with a comically oversized Tazz?
Dry fitting looks good. I'll start assembly tomorrow. |

Don't see why you couldn't cert L1 with an upscaled Tazz, but most want to cert with the simplest airframe possible on a "baby H" H128.
Some have certed with the 1/70 Apogee Saturn V.

Not mine, either, but if one wants the highest chance of certing, you want to go with an airframe that has the best chance of flying again with no fixes.
If it's busticated when recovered, NO CERT, try againnnnnnn. I would think an upscaled Tazz would be one of the WORST possible choices for certing. Fins that survive flight on a C6-3 or D12-3 don't necessarily hold up to H128 power when upscaled.

Great potential for it to be damaged upon impact as well......you mentioned such an issue at the very modest upscale you've already done! Ive done a ton of large delta wing gliders all the way up to a J415 way back in '96. I can surely attest at what happens when you start upscalling 'cool stuff' up to HPR sizes. If your local HPR club RSO types are fine with an upscale Tazz deal coming in at over 50fps then go ahead and make one on a reasonable H such as the DMS H100. Slow enough on the way up, and with tougher tubing and NC, should survive 'impact' if you can fly this on a SOFT field. BTW I idd do an upscale Rotaroc deal back in -93 with an H35. Didnt rotate was fast as smaller versions but it worked. Wished AT still made all those cool old disposable motors - most of the current DMS jobs are higher thrust. |
