WAC Corporal built-up fins.
I discovered yesterday that I had to burn one last vacation day before the end of the year, so that left ONLY today to do it.
Time to try a project I've been thinking about: constructing built-up fins for a Semroc 1:10 scale WAC Corporal. The kit come with (3) fin blanks of 3/16" balsa, but I don't quite have the skill to hand -scrape them into the scale profile. I've tried to do it with my nice, new Micro-Plane but all I succeeded in doing was swearing and bleeding. Using the kit's heavy fiber stock fin pattern, I slit (3) blanks from my best sheet of 1/16" basswood. I then shape the corners and bevel all of the edges--except the root edge. TBC

Now for the chord.
I slit a thin piece from the 1/16" basswood sheet, glue it to the fin blank, and then bevel and shorten the thin piece. I then cut a piece of .012" thick cardstock that's polished on one side. I apply Titebond Red to the bevels of the leading, outer, and trailing edges of the fin blank, lay the unpolished surface of the cardstock onto it, and hold all of the edges until the glue grabs. TBC

After the glue sets on the one side, I slit the excess cardstock from the blank and then repeat the process for the other side. After the glue dries completely I sand the leading, outer, and trailing edges some more.

and................Voila!
All (3) fins are done and in less than an hour! It's time for The Price Is Right. Thanks for watching.

Looks like a great way to profile a fin. Based on John Boren’s recommendation, I bought the same mini plane he uses. Unfortunately, he has probably 20-30 years experience using one. I have no experience.
Perhaps I’ve thought of my first New Year’s resolution: Learning to use the David Combi Hand Plane.

Hey Jeffy,
Do you score the inside and fold the cardstock along the taper line to highlight the profile before gluing? I've built cardstock fins that use that technique.

On some of them I do that--but on this one I didn't because in most of the WAC Corporal photos I could find the crease caused by the chord looked quite subtle.
