Interesting to see in the 1991 Catalog, the large #89 set is in standard horizontal chest format (instead of large vertical format), with less items.
I have NEVER seen one of these (or even heard of) outside this catalog.

Pretty much any "Leathercraft" items are gone.
The Craft Swivel Knives and X-Calibre knife have been added.
the #7 blade and #2 blade are now present.
A different 'advanced' Mitre box that I have never seen is now present too.

That "Vice Grip" Mitre Box of page 6 in the newly posted 1980 catalog is one I have never heard of.
May have to check with Sue a about that that one.

This catalog also shows a part number for "Old #19" and "Old #24" blades with the original "wide length" style of those blades, but only available in 100 paks. This catalog identifies those were at least still available as late as 1980.

It was interesting to note that the more traditional Xacto tools, i.e., knives and blades, did not appear until page 24 of this 1980 catalog. They went a little more ‘artsy’ too with the line drawings on most all tools. Still, good to have another data point in the Xacto catalog universe.

I have another catalog document from around this same time frame to scan. It is only about 11 pages but I have not been able to find a date on it. It was with the 1980 catalog, along with a 1982 price list, so possibly it is a ‘brief’ 1982 catalog. Will scan here in the next few days and get it out as well.

Scott: Thanks again for hosting these for us!

Earl

Looking forward to seeing your next mini catalog, Earl.

I also noted the largest set offered in the 1980 catalog was the #89 set that I have 2 of.
The #99 set was sadly gone.

The large #98L leathercraft set was still there.
There is one of those in mint unused shape currently on ebay for $249.99. It contains the special #6L knife with the #33 blade installed.
May be worth it as I have never seen one in that shape, but I wouldn't go over $125 for it.

Yes, Xacto production is now in China.
Think it happened around when they were bought by Elmer's (the glue company).

Thanks Scott for posting another one for us.

This particular catalog, more brief than the others, is not dated. But, it was in a small group of Xacto literature with the 1980 catalog that I scanned and sent to Scott a little over a week ago. Also included in that group of literature was a 1982 price list, but I don't know for sure that this is a 1982 catalog. It is at LEAST 1981 because the catalog states on the front that Xacto is "a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hunt Manufacturing". Hunt purchased Xacto in 1981.

My best guess is this is a 1981 catalog. The back cover introduces their X-caliber series of knives. However, the 1982 price list -- which I have added as the last pages of this catalog -- 'stars' the items that are new. The X-caliber series of knives are listed, but are NOT shown as new. Meaning, they had already BEEN out, probably in 1981.

So, certainly a very early 80s catalog, probably 1981, but not certain.

Just saw another ebay listing and grabbed it for several hobby tool catalogs, including these two Xacto catalogs. The one of the left obviously is a 1977 catalog. The other does not have a date on the cover, but I would venture to say maybe a 1971, which would be great!

Postal service is getting much better and I have been getting things delivered the past couple months in 4-5 days most times. Once received, I'll scan these two and send to Scott for posting like the two most recent ones from the early 80s.
