Even back in the day I just got some fishing weights out of my dad’s tackle box and hammered them flat. Maybe they don’t make them out of lead now. But model plane hobby shops still have lead weight you can hammer out the way you want.

Can anyone confirm the weight of the Estes lead weight? The one I measured was .15 oz. Does this sound correct?

It is listed as "0.125" ounces. Very close to the 0.15.

Great idea! I still have lead fishing weights from my dad’s tackle box. They date back to the 50s probably. If I flattened them carefully, they’d have a centered hole in them where the brass wire ran thru them.

yes, that's why I used them. But of course, it's never too hard to punch a hole in it.

NCW-1 & PL-1
These weights (NCW-1) were ones that I have had forever,
the rare thing is the PL-1 the one once Payload weight. I have one but have no idea where it came from.

Did someone say NCW-1?
https://www.oldrocketforum.com/showthread.php?t=2509 I picked up a bunch of Carl's WL-7 weights, he didn't have them for very long, IIRC.

I've got several of those old lead weights around the house somewhere (might be challenge to find them though). Never occurred to me they might be valuable... Way back in the early 1970s, I was at a rocketry competition in the Denver area. Someone had an appropriate mold, so the night before several of us sat around melting fishing weights to pour in the mold to make the lead payload weights for the competition the next day. Might have lost a few IQ points doing that |
