Default Atlas V 541

Comrades:

I need to build an Atlas V 541. I have been unable to locate any now-out-of-production Real Space Rockets kits. Anybody got a drawing? And yes, I checked Rockets of the World and the Supplements. Nada.

You could buy a 1/144 static kit from realspacemodels.com. Their 500-series kit is $60. Some of their kits are even based on tubes rather than being solid resin (not sure on the Atlas V kit, however). Maybe they could help you with dimensions too.

Out of curiosity, why the 541? Mars Science Laboratory or Mars 2020, perhaps?

Mark,

Shoot me an email and you will have access to 253 MB of Atlas V data ( Dropbox invitation ) . . . The PDF files are very helpful !

Thanks guys,

The target is Rover 2020; A challenge from a program-related engineer.

An Atlas V is 150" diameter, Shroud diameter is either 197" or 213" depending on your source and the SRBs are 62".

So I poked around the Semroc tube chart and came up with 1/100ish scale would be BT-58 to ST-20 with ST-6 SRBs. Or slightly smaller 1/120ish would be LT-115 to ST-16 with BT-5 SRBs.

1/50 scale 3" to 4" with LT-115 SRBs seems excessive. And I don't even want to think about how much Gordy would charge for that nose cone and transition.

I have a DFR Technologies Atlas V New Horizons kit that I’ll part with. Is that what you’re you’re looking for?

Thanks Guys,

Jeffy, many thanks for your offer, but between Dave's stuff and what I got on the internet, I've decided to scratch build and use the project for my NARTrek Gold. Plus, I don't want the challenger to say "Awe, you just built a kit."

You’re welcome. I wish you all the best on your scratch build.

Let us know how you plan to do the canted ogives on the SRMs. 3D printing would be easiest, but there are other options too.

Incidentally, we just did a pathfinder exercise for Mars 2020. Had to demonstrate the ability to access the spacecraft (rover) through the fairing to install the RTG. Fun stuff!
