New Estes kits at Hobby Lobby - Might be exclusives
I found some new Estes model rocket kits at Hobby Lobby. They were still in a big box, that were ready for hanging up on the walls.
One is a Cherokee-E and then a rocket with a single cylindrical glider instead of two like the Double Ringer. I also found another one that I haven't seen in the Estes 2019 catalog.

Talking with John Langford after the manufacturers forum at NARAM 61 I learned that there might have been the demise of model rockets at Hobby Lobby. He said they had intense negotiations and the compromise was making a line of rocket kits exclusively for Hobby Lobby. They have different face cards and are all new kits. John had several with him. The Luna Bug is a sci fi mosquito. A single ring version of the double ringer called Solo and others I don’t remember.

The Cherokee-E and Luna Bug were displayed at NARAM along with the Gryphon boost glider and a re-issued Phantom see-thru display rocket. I doubt, with the long lasting popularity of the design, that Cherokee will be a Hobby Lobby exclusive - other rockets though, that’s a reasonable possibility I suppose.

So, Bob, which of these exclusives will need C6-0s, since they didn’t blow those out with red tag prices as they did the B6-0s? I didn’t see anything in the “exclusive” livery in the box that John Langford opened up at the Manufacturer’s Forum.
BTW, that new face card art is really nice.

Is the Cherokee E an upscale, or just a Cherokee D with a longer engine mount?

Hmm... I didn’t look that close. Based on nothing more than my memory I’d say it’s a BT60 based kit so a bit of an upscale from BT55. UPDATE: pix posted on the Estes FB fan page shows the diameter as 1.3” - can’t read the length so I was mistaken, it’s still a BT55 based rocket. And John Boren confirmed that the ESAM and Cherokee are included in the Hobby Lobby exclusive kits. Last edited by Scott_650 : 08-02-2019 at 11:18 AM. |

Cherokee is one of my favorite rockets. I wonder if John would consider making the fins through the tube (just barely) to help with alignment, assembly and landing strength.
I'll tell you what would be really cool. A classroom pack of Cherokee-C. Say 6 rockets and a list of recommended motors and all that stuff they put in the science project kits. I used to use the Estes Comet for schools rather than Alpha's or whatever. Bigger is easier for younger kids to handle, they fly lower, they are pretty easily repairable even if built badly. It has to use a parachute because of its size but the typical chute 12" is only barely big enough so it does not drift much. You can see it in the sky better. I for one want one project to be a piston! No piston B6-4. Piston B6-6. Altitrack to verify! Just Jerry http://v-serv.com/usr/kits/pistonlaunchedmicroc.htm Version 2.0 Multi-Roc school pack. I drove over to local Hobby Lobby this morning to check on the availability of the exclusive Estes kits.
The store had all eight of them on the pegs. I picked up one of each (There was only one Luna Bug out). The kit names and product numbers are: ESAM-58 EST0661 Tigres EST0811 Long Ranger EST0814 Luna Bug EST0816 Cadet EST2021 Cherokee-E EST2408 Epic II EST7286 Solo EST7288 Here's pictures of the face cards and backs of the kits.
